Anderson Plug

I  am aftersome advise on adnderson plugs.
The auto electrician says I can either have it wired to the batteries to charge them and let the hot wire run the fridge or have the fridge wired to the plug.
Which is the way to go?

My battery charger doesn't seem to do a very good job and the solar panels (2 x 80W) won't keep up with thefridge.

Any help on this will be appreciated.

Cheers

Garry
I presume your refering to a Waeco or Engel fridge, I use a Waeco in the Troopy when out and about and just use a hot wired Cig lighter socket direct from No 2 Battery, I mounted the socket in the rear and plug the fridge into that, it works perfect, If I were to get an Andeson plug I would wire it up the same way , Wire is just a 7amp 12 v wiring with an inline fuse about 6 inches from the battery. If you have a heavier gauge wire then use it, won't do any harm,

I've got the frig in my van wired to the hot wire through a fridge switch (which turns the frig off when the car stops.  The anderson plug is wired to the batteries.  It works for me.

I've been told that the voltage drop through the hot wire prevents a full charge to the van battery.

Yo Garry,

I have a cable vs current chart that I cannot seem to post up here. If you can email me with your email addy (click on my user name for my addy I will send the file to you. Failing that, how far from the back of the fridge to the battery in real metres not as the crow flies as that is very important to get right for the voltage drop etc. The cable is going to be large which ever way you look at it so it might be better to look at improving what you already have so keep watching this space. I will post what I can but we do need more info.

According to the chart you need 6 B&S cable. Both black and red + & -. Like I said Garry send me your email address and I will send you heaps of info regarding which will make your decision easier..

I would run the fridge direct from the Solar regulator (if possible) or wired direct to the Auxiliary battery via a good fuse.

Two x 80 Watt Solar panels should put out ~10 Amps, so it must be some mutha of a power hungry fridge - OR- the battery bank capacity is too small ??

What brand/model Solar Regulator do you use ?
I ask because some solar regulators will run the fridge direct from the regulator, therefore getting the power direct from the sun to run the fridge, not the battery, the battery is continued to be charged by the regulator if the Solar panels are capable of putting out more Amps than the fridge requires, as shown in the attachment.
