Water

We left home thursday morning for 3 nights of free camping with 100L of water on board. During the trip my mate travelling behind me called me up and said every time we went over a bump or dip in the road water was pouring out from under the van.
Stopped and had a look ,water was dripping from overflow pipebut couldn't find anything else  wrong. By the time we got to Clare I was down to a quarter of a tank. My thoughts was there must be some sort of butterfly valve on the overflow which opens when full and then shuts preventing further loss, would this be correct?
I know how to fill and use the water but really have no idea on the mechanics of how it works.

Another question that this raises is how to you fill your water tanks when travelling wiyhout staying in cp"s?

Any advice is appreciated.

thanks

How curious. Ok I'd reccomend the following:
Remove the tanks from under the van and check that there is not a crack or tear anywhere. Check that the overflow pipe is still connected to the tank
Check that the tank is not loose.
Is the overflow connected to a tube that ends up higher than the tank? It should.
I've never come across one with a butterfly valve in it.
I had a similar problerm but discovered that the drain c o c k had a crack in the plastic that only opened when we were driving due to vibration hence leaving a trail behind like a "birmingham dribbler"
Filling with water..... I always carry some water simply to keep the c of g low. Depends where you are I guess, most servos would give you water if you bought fuel or if you wanted to do it the hard way a pump or bucket and funnel from a creek ensuring that it was not saline water and put in some chlorine to kill the bugs.

Thanks Basil,
Got under the van this morning and had a look. The overflow pipe was 1" internal diameter plastic hose. I have shortened it and put a cap over the end with a 1/4" hole drilled into it. Will see how this goes next trip.
