RE: Welcome to the Solo's Forum

Hi All,
Have just joined and am looking forward to getting to know some of you in cyberspace or on the road. Heading from Victoria to Flinders Ranges in October. Any tips on places to stay and things to see?

Hi Pete and welcome to the grey nomads, look none of my business but it is probably not a good idea to put your phone number up for all and sundry to see, far better to use your web address and that way you can at least vet the callers

Hi Pete,

Welcome to Solo grey nomads. (not a singles site, in case some of the bawdy messages gave the wrong impression). Will you be travelling through this way? (Greenvale) Getting very hot soon.

Our swimming pool is opening today, so must off for a sausage sizzle and a swim.

everybody knows it's not a singles site, lesley you are the only one that keeps bringing that up, the bawdy messages as you call them, are nothing more than freindly banter, thats what this site is well known for, travellers are free to talk to whom they like, I was a co-founder of this thread so I know what we designed it for

Thanks Dave,

VERY 'freindly banter'. I don't want YOUR style of banter to be inflicted on ME. ie talk about solo women doing massages for their travel costs, and other tripe eg Mons g-string.
I am just as entitled to post, maybe more so, as I am ACTUALLY solo, not married as you are.

Don't be so rude when you were the one to warn Pete not to post his phone number. ????

I didnt mention "massages" this is your imagination at work, I also didnt state that you were not entitled to post, once again your imagination at work, how the hell you work out that I am rude is beyond me, fully aware that you are "solo" but do you travel, this is after all a travelling forum, perhaps if you posted some of your travel tails and future wishes

Magnetic Island off Townsville is a 'must see'. Should you want to take your car/rig there is a ferry, but one can also leave the car at the ferry-terminal and for a day trip Pensioners travel at an amazing discount.
One can also stay at Magnums for a great rate, with Alma Bay your magnificent Sea-view.
See photos on the Share photo forum
For my previous trip in May see my blogspot from my prifile page.

RE my welcome to the solo forum

Thank you for your welcome.  You are quite right, it is none of your business, but you obviously feel it is. At 86 years of age my name, address and phone number are in the phone book for all to see and I cannot see the need to "vet "  members who might contact me. After I have assured Nancy that  I never drew the slightest inference this was a "singles site" I will not be involved with this forum in the future.  Best of luck.

RE: Welcome to the Solo's Forum

Hi Nancy thanks for the welcome. At 86 years of age the thought of considering this forum to be a "singles" site is not even a remote possibility. That was my first and this is my last posting to the forum. Regards Peter.

always your choice to be a member or not of course pete, the reason I mentioned not to put your phone number for all to see is because it is not only members who have access to a site such as this, a distinct population concentration is worth a lot of money to a telemarketing sales person who target this exact age and marital status demographic, if you only put your email address down at least you can delete the troublesome ones without them getting any further, whereas the unscrupulous amongst us can very readily turn this info in to cash, get upset and grumpy by all means but dont say you werent warned. just a warning to all and sundry, the days of complete trust are unfortunately gone, guard your privacy or unleash the unscrupulous information thieves

Hi Veronica, I have been away so I missed your entrance to this wonderful forum.  Welcome to cyberspace.  Don't take any notice of the crude banter lol, give em heaps.  I know you will enjoy yourself.  Lots of good advice here from Dave and Basil, mind you, I'm not sure about Basil as he does have "senior moments" .....  lol gotcha Bassie.   Anyway Veronica jump right in and take care ... Monica

Hi Pete,

If your still watching, don't quit now, I have been away so I missed all the fun.  Come in and chat with us, I know you will enjoy "talking" with everyone, Lesley/Nancy just gets upset with the solo thingie, she also thinks we are crude ......  lol and I guess we are with our g-strings and the like.  All jokes aside .... lots of information here for you Pete.  If you have a sense of humour you will enjoy this forum.

Hope to see you again ...... Monica

I think its perhaps time to take a chill out pill on this one. I for one would certainly think twice before publishing my phone number for security reasons alone. Also I enjoy reading the friendly banter going back and forth, and if it gets a bit rude at times and it upsets you ....dont read it. Probably best to cancel the newspaper and not use the TV either. Lifes pretty boring without a joke to help it along, Lets not forget that this is a good forum where travellers can get a lot of information very quickly when needed, and if someone chooses not to read it its their loss... Happy trvelling Keith

As someone who has been subjected to identy fraud I strongly agree with  dave. We have gone thru 2 years of receiving bills that other people have chalked up using my wife's identity and trying to prove it wasn't her, has at times been nightmarish.
Even had Dept of transport advising us that she is deceased.

So be wary of putting your personell details on any site.

Heaps of good information on this site, read, adsorb and  hopefully the information gleaned here will make travelling safer and more enjoyable

thank you for that backup Garry, and I sympathise with your position, everybody should guard their identity as much as possible, phone number is in the book, but guard the rest, otherwise it will cost you, I may make some people grumpy but only those that dont understand todays world, and hey I will stick my nose in if I think yours is at risk, hell I forgot Keith, sorry mate, thanks to you as well, you are right a lot of rubbish everywhere these days, but please just protect yourself, I have seen first hand what an unscrupulous person does with a little unguarded information, dont worry about the banter, it is meaningless, aimed at getting a smile, Basil and mon's "G" string hell I'm still smiling, then bloody ole grizz and his undies back to front, mate if you dont smile at that you're already dead, life is short, if you see a stranger without a smile, give him one of your's

I have a slightly different view on what personal details to publish and what not to publish.
I do not publish our email address, because I can not control those who might send spam or other unwanted material and emails are free to the sender, so there is no disincentive there.
I will/do publish our mobile telephone numbers. If someone wants to pay to speak to us, they are unlikely to be a problem (and it takes them time to make troublesome calls and they will get sick of that).
Telemarketing calls could be a problem, but it is now possible to ban them by contacting the Dept of Communications.

On the subject of posts, I would prefer that with technical subjects there were less opinions posted by those who obviously have no knowledge of the issues (unless they are clearly described as opinion). This simply confuses the issue and encourages arguement (as opposed to debate, which is healthy). It also makes it very difficult for the OP to sort out the useful advise. But this is a pipe dream.

As far as 'Solos' are concerned, I don't have a clue what travelling solo is like, I can only imagine, so I should not advise others and I limit my posts accordingly. I do know some solos, and I might relate their experiences though.

Re 'smut'. Let's not drag each other down to the lowest common denominator. If you would not like your 10 or 12 year old daughter (or grand daughter) involved in a conversation, don't post it. It is not 'smart' and it is rarely funny, IMHO.

These are my opinions.

Cheers,
Peter

trouble is there are so many "self proclaimed experts on everthing " out there arguments from the experienced ones (those that travel a lot) are inevitable, the "OP" as you call us have brains, we sort out the wheat from the chaff, do you think they are stupid, is that what you are saying, unable to tell right from wrong, and just because we have a different opinion from yours doesnt make us argumentitive or wrong, what works for one is overkill for another, who decides what is "smut" and what is not, we are all "adults" here, a 10 - 12 yo would not be interested in a bloody thing we have to say here, and the site is not designed for them, its designed for adults, if you have the mindset of a ten or twelve year old then perhaps this is not the place for you, we dont need the self proclaimed good taste gestapo in here telling all and sundry what to write and what not to write, everyone is entitled to an opinion right or wrong if you dont like that opinion, STIFF, this is a forum for everybody to have a say about anything they wish, there has been no "smut" only banter, get a life, mix with people, learn what we talk about out there ALL the time, I support solos, always have, I get a lot of email from the people on this very site, I know a lot of solo travellers, this is not the forum to work out your dislikes and likes, this should be in the main forum not the solos, if you wish to hold yourself up as the only knowledgeble "expert" on the forum please table "ALL" relevent documentation, electrician license numbers, electrical fitters license number, tyre fitters association member number, as well as solar fitters association numbers, if you cant produce these numbers (which are checkable) then fall in with the rest of us and stop holding yourself up as something you are not, merely modifying  a vehicle does not support this, we have all done it and some of us still are

Great attitude dave06. There are people leaving this forum, but that is obviously not a concern of yours?

daveo6 said: the "OP" as you call us Sorry if this was ambiguous, the 'OP' is the original poster, who asked a question or sought information and therefore it stands to reason that they may not be able to sort the fact from the opinion.

Cheers,
Peter

I'm finding the solos' forum is becoming something quite different from what I thought it was intended for.

Dave06, I believe you set it up. Correct me if I'm wrong but I wanted to give credit where it's due. At the moment, it does not seem to be a forum for solos or for helping solos.

Hey, here's a thought : if you're NOT a solo or you have nothing to say that is directly relevant to solos, please use the general forum.

I am solo, as when I have an opinion, or view, on any topic - I AM RIGHT - trouble is, if the view or opinion is (nicely) slightly adrift, how would I know? answer use the Solo's forum

But i see no point in attacking anyone, over their view, but will ask, is that view a, response to the issue at hand, or is a red herring. Me, myself and I (the three of us) will decide, and I expect the others to use their mates too. No need for personal attacks - no point

Lighten up - who can or can not do whatever, is not material to the issue of doing it on your own for whatever reason you choose that way of travel. What is smut or social humour? It is an opinion and one can always "look away", turn off, don't read - use these if it offends

If someone on here, who IS solo, lets their details be known for other solo's, then each one of us solo's, will decide. There may be solo's looking to travel together, just like regular people. This point is possible now redundant, as the Webmaster has allowed private messages.

We ( sorry the royal WE) appreciate the knowledge, that is freely given, and I am not sure that this forum will survive, if left to solo's only, but maybe, it should be tested, as the main forum has all the information.

But a slinging match is definitely not what we need here, especially between two well respected identities. Us humans, we are a odd bunch - gives us a beer, and we are mates - disagree and its on.

Any who have information that is useful to solo travel, SHOULD feel welcome to provide it, but in the knowledge of being an invited guest

I am also guilty of posting bad jokes, see my signature

Right, lets try again. I am still hoping for a shared expense trip with another SOLO in or near this area. Did anyone see 'Two for the top end"?
Living in Greenvale (205 kl to Charters Towers, 245 kls to Townsville, 200+ going north, to Innot Hot Springs........)
The birdlife here at the moment is FABULOUS. Tempted?

RE: Heading across the nullabor very soon

Hi again, well I have 6 weeks to go and heading to Wa, so If any one wants to tag along or is going that way let me know .
I like any some females are a little anxious, so you arent alone when doing it alone.
Im always fearful of the unknown mainly because I suffer from bad panic attacks hence my fear.

Im in the SE o f Sa at the moment and only going by car and see what happens when i get there. I want to travel up the Wa coast for a look.
Any of you heard of wwoof then take a look at their site you have to buy the book to become a memmber then bobs your uncle. You get to travel around our amazing Australia get free food and a warmbed and showers in exchange for helping them out with odd jobs for male and female persons.
Some will keep you on if it works out and get a small wage.. Way to go

RE: Welcome to the Solo's Forum

Another thing is if you dont have mobile coverage and have a computer on your travels or access to one and your family dont have internet, then join smspup its free text message service to mobiles. Its great to use when you dont have any phone credit as well. I use it all the time from home as well and saves me heaps in money for text messages to my son..
