we were at a mates 60th over the weekend at waikerie, towards the end of the show when the crowd had dwindled to about 20 and the topic of traveling came up, along with this topic many others came up as well as keeping food fresh, I also found the same thing said in a camping book I had at home, thanks go to viv moon, I thought you may have an interest in these

bread
wrap each loaf on its own, leaving in its plastic bag, in a couple of sheets of newspaper and then wrap in foil. seal the whole thing with tape and store out of the sun, this will keep up to two weeks fresh

fruit and vegies  
wrap each one up in newspaper or butchers paper, if you can get those "green long life fruit bags" they work really well, keep in fridge if you can but out of the sun if you cant

eggs

keep in cool dry place in the original container, to keep up to 12 months, coat the eggs in parrafin wiping over with vaseline or cooking oil will also lengthen their shelf life

Hi Dave.
Thanks for the tips on how to keep your food longer, I like the one regarding the eggs it makes sense, keeps the moisture out.

Those tips all work well.
The eggs one works by keeping the air out Frank. We swap our eggs into plastic containers (instead of the paper ones), but they don't fit big eggs, so we buy smaller ones to fit the container.

If you have an inverter (even a fairly small one), the small Cryovac vacuum packing machines work a treat too, for meat, fish, almost anything. They don't use much power, but the bags are a bit dear.
Some butchers (especially country ones) will vacuum pack your meat in meal size packs for you, if you ask. Some will do it for no charge, some charge around $1 per pack extra. Means hat you can store stuff in the fridge for a long time that would otherwise need to be frozen.

If coming through Port Macquarie and you want  any meats Cryovac  to extend their life drop into Lighthouse Meats at Wotonga Street  Lighthouse Beach , the best and  cheapest meats and smallgoods  within 200 km of here.   Mention Wombat sent you and Shaun  the  Manager  and Son In Law will  fix it up,.  We are  doing this type of packaging all the time for the traveler.   If I'm in the shop it will be my job to sought your requirements  out  while you have a coffee next door . Now there's an offer you can't refuse

if you are offering a "distinct" discount or a "special offering" for grey nomads, then I think it may be allowed to "sneak" through as long as god allows it

Before my time but judging from the driving skills I 've seen in the carpark I wouldn't be surprised.

Mr Rudd should throw all these dollars he has into cab fares or public transport for elderly drivers that would reduce the level of road rage for all of us.

well for some anyway they shouldnt be on the road but they have no alternative, they are also frightened of the public transport and cant afford the taxis, but I agree some shockers out there, but go down the main street on dole bludgers day and watch the drivers
