Tap Fittings

What tap fittings do you carry on your travels? I have been told they are different in each state, if so what sizes do I need to get?

Hi Gary, I have found that the tap fittings come in two sizes and if you buy a connector to fit the smaller tap it often comes with a plastic convertor to fit the larger size. If not these can be purchased quite cheaply. I usually buy half a dozen at a time as I seem to have a habit of leaving them on the tap when I move off. The taps in NSW, QLD and Victoria are all the same at least that is what I have found Keith

Hi gary and Kerry. I've been to all states except Tassie (on the agenda) and taps can vary from park to park. but generally just the standard double connector which gives you the larger and smaller connection. There's usually somewhere close by to buy the right fitting anyway. And the tend of leaving them behind must be in epidemic proportions. We all do it.  Fortunately they don't cost much.  Safe and happy travels. Granny

Domestic hose taps come in 2 sizes, 1/2" BSP and 3/4" BSP (BSP = British standard pipe.) Some van owners discover the fittings don't screw on and have to get an adaptor that is because the van manufacturer (Jayco) use American fittings that though they are imperial NPT (national pipe thread) the thread pitch is different.
I have some fittings that actually lock onto the click on fittings which you have to unscrew from the tap ensuring that you take the lot with you. I think they are "hardie pope" brand.

G'day Gary & Kerry ...   Me being Me, I have gone into great detail to address the plumbing issue !!!!

All of my pipes water & sullage are carried in conduits I fitted under the van in 6M lengths with fittings attached & sealed from dust & leakage.

I have fitted a plumbing parts box on the rear bumper out of sight behind the spare wheel, containing -

- Several tap fittings as described by Basil.  (augmented by those left behind by others so it is not a problem where I leave any behind) ; plus a couple of hose joiners.

- A packet of 'O' rings or various sizes as well as a range of the other tap washers.

- A pair of very cheap vice grip pliers & long nose cutter/pliers (sprayed with Inox as an anti rust agent) for tightening connectors, changing 'O' rings etc.

- A roll of thread tape to stop leaks .. pink stuff is best.

- A range of connectors & elbows for my various sullage pipe configurations.

And finally a cloth for wiping the pipes as I return them to their carring conduits .. & wiping my hands when finished. (I wash it after use & it is usually dry by the time I need it again at the next stop.  Every now and again my wife throws it out!!!)

ps.  I got rid of the Jayco American thread thingo by fitting a bypass to an antibackflow valve & tap to a pushfit mains water input connection.

Yes very wise move... One does have to wonder why they put them on, maybe Mr Jayco thinks that because they are US fitting they must be good...
We are lucky we are not in Europe, every country has different standards and you need a dozen adapters in your kit....

I only carry the two basic size fittings plus a bucket and a funnell, the thing that does come in handy very often is the vandal proof tap handle, most councils place vandal proof taps on their stands and with this doohickey we can still "nick" the water

saves going in to the information centre and "borrowing" theirs with the accompanying "deposit" we got ours off ebay

one thing about the push on fitments, make sure you put the brass ones on otherwise risk the hose blowing off in the middle of the night and wetting all and sundry and I know sundry, he doesnt like to be wet and all gets pretty upset about it too!!
