The Avan Ovation I pick up in two weeks has an 83-Amp Deep Cycle house battery with PROVISION for two house batteries.
Is it better to have them put a second one in at the factory rather than have one fitted later should I need it? Would this increase my ability to be independent of power for a few days or maybe a week?
You may find it a lot cheaper to have a second battery supplied and fitted at your local battery place, ring around and get a few quotes and get a quote from Avan. Doubling your capacity of the batteries would double the time you could stop without rechargeing but it would also double the time taken to recharge. I'd advise you do install the second battery as opposed to 1 large one, if you have one large battery and a cell dies then you have to replace the whole thing, with 2 batteries you are only up for the cost of replacing one.

Hi sue its best to have the same batteries and to be the same age. If they fit them they will be done right for warranty
Usually battery waranties are covered by the battery manufacturer, not the vehicle manufacturer, excepting in this case probably the battery for the engine would be covered by Fiat and the other batteries by whoever supplied them. Most battery warranties are not worth the paper they are written on, read the fine print LOL!

Hi Sue, Dunno about learning curve, more like a maddening curve. The more I look into battery power for vans, the more confused I become about how to install them, how to charge them, and what they will run. As I am mainly interested in their use for powering fridges (another technical minefield), I have finally taken the easy way out and bought a Techni Ice ice box! Easy, silent and never been known to flatten a battery. Hope it all works out well for you. Tony
