Thetford Toilet Chemicals

Question 1:
I need the chemicals for the Thetford cassette toilet. Is there anywhere between Batemans Bay and Bega in NSW where I can buy what I need?  And does anyone know if I can buy them on-line?

Thanks in advance
cheers

Hi Sue, any camping place will sell you the chemicals and yes you can buy them online just google toilet chemicals, however we make our own and have done for a long time now, it is far cheaper and a lot better than the horrid chemicals you buy, the mixtures are as follows

solution (1)
100 ML MYO DISINFECTANT
1 cup borax dissolved in hot water
1 cup cloudy ammonia
add water to make up 2 ltrs
add 150 ml to top tank on change over

solution 2
1 ltr pineoclean
1 ltr cloudy ammonia
1 cup borax dissolved in hot water
place 150 ml in top tank on change

solution 3
bottle of cloudy ammonia
bottle of eucalyptus oil
2 cups borax mixed with hot water
150 ml in top tank on change

all these additives are cheap and easily obtainable from any grocery shop

I would treat these the same as any potty additive, I.E. do not put it down the septic toilets at caravan parks, place the waste in a dump point just the same as you would ordinarily, they have been proven safe in a septic system, however I would still dispose of the waste in a dump point just for the convienience

G'day Sue,
We use a cap full of the Woolies el-cheapo version dissolved in a litre of warm water. Put into the holding tank. Lasts 3 days. You can empty before it is too full as the cost is very low compared to all other treatments. This has been the best product we have ever used. Beats Odour-b-gone and Bio-Magic hands down.

Also good to use once month to let it soak (without use) using 2 heaped caps full dissolved in warm water and fill cassette to the brim. Let soak all day and empty. Cleans it out very well!

Costs less than $5 for two months which includes some washing of clothes!

Make sure it is the Woolies or Coles El- cheapo brand and NOT the Branded Napi-San.  The Woolies and Coles Nappy Treatments are Septic Safe whereas the Branded Napi-San states to check with Septic company if you are unsure.

Hope this helps.

Have a good Christmas and a very Happy and prosperous New Year.

Best Regards and Safe Travelling.
John

G'day JRH  ..

You replied that you use the "woolies el-cheapo brand"  .. I'm interested ..but their brand of what product?

This is a recipie that I have had for a few years but never tried .. It is pretty close to Dave's recipies.  I still use the commercial stuff  .. time to change though?

Porta Loo Chemical (from Ossie 2005)

1 cup Pine Oil

1 cup Borax

1 cup Cloudy Ammonia

Water

Dissolve borax in hot water

Add remaining ingredients

Add water to 4 litres

2 lids per 15 L of tank capacity.

G'day Cupie,

Many apologies I must have had a seniors moment, the product is Woolies or Coles home brand of Nappy Treatment Plus.

A capful equalls one Tablespoon and lasts 3 days or longer but 3 days ensures no smells although we have left it longer, around a week and no bad smell at all.  Do not use the branded Nappy San as this does not work as well as the Woolies or Coles home brands.  The Home brands are Septic Safe whereas the Branded Nappy San does not appear to be so.

We do add a little Pinoclean to the top tank but it is not really necessary, just our preference and a little spray with  cheap Olive Oil in the bowl lubricates the seal and slider and helps to prevent anything sticking to the sides.

We have also used the same recipe as Dave06, it works fine but we found that it tends to crystalise in the bottle after a few weeks, we just gave it a good shake and put it in without any detrimental effect on our Porta-Pottie

Hope this helps.

Best Regards and Safe Travelling.
John

Ps: Edit was for typos.

Just be careful what you put into some dump points or long drops where a septic system may be involved . If you kill off the bacteria then everyone thereafter will want your arse on a plate.

Most of those chem tot products are available at Big W or K -Mart in the outdoors section

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I vaguely recall discussing this topic elsewhere on the forum....
Anyway I have taken to not useing any chemical in the bottom tank but putting some Myo in the top tank simply to kill any odours....
I have seen a system that is available that has a fan that sucks air out of the holding tank and thus causes decomposition of the contents by airobic bacteria like a composting toilet. If anyone can find the link please post it, I cant seem to find it anywhere.....

You can buy these chemicals at most camping or outdoorsy type shops BUT they are expensive ( you pay for the brand) and they are not all that good if compared to some of the home remedies as generously provided here.

Just Curious John; how do you get the clothes into the cassette?

And here is the Australian supplier of these things.....
http://www.aussietraveller.com.au/products/sog_unit.htm
They claim that as there are no chemicals involved that you do not need a dump point as the errrrrrrrr "waste product" is entirely natural.
I'm gonna get one of these.....

JRH, I just bought some "home Brand" Nappy Treatment Plus, which is all that is available to me at present. This works a treat. No harmful stuff. Confirmed by another forum. $3 something per kg. at Woolies Narooma. (dearer than most). Works well, though Basil is right - even undies don't fit in the cassette!no LOL - guess I'll stick to hand/machine washing.
Great advice, as usual. Thanks folks.

so how does nappisan compare pricewise with the remedies or is it just a lot simpler to use one product and the price is secondary, $3 per kilo sounds reasonable, how much do you put in the top tank, how much in the bottom tank and or final rinse cycle

Dave, I'm told the 'capful' is the container lid of the Woolworths 'Home Brand' Nappy Treatment Plus.
On the container directions they refer to the level lid for measuring.
The directions for Nappy Treatment say '1 Level Lid' to 7 litres of water, and with the cassette been 18L - two heaped lidfulls shoud do the job, or thereabouts.

One person I know uses Dettol Lavender around the bowl another uses Cussons dishwashing lquid.

G'day Dave,

I only use one capfull (1 tablespoon full) of Woolies Nappy Treatment Plus in 1 litre of water in the bottom Tank and just a dash of Pino-clean in the top tank, this lasts 3 days and sometimes longer depending on the amount of waste, after 3 days I usally add another capful of powder to the bottom tank or I empty the Cassette, depends on the circumstances at the time.

I also spray the seal, slide and the bowl with a cheap Olive Oil, this helps to preserve the seal and the slide works a little easier and the oil on the bowl helps to stop anything sticking to it.  As I mentioned in another post this costs us about $5 for a couple of months and Irona uses some of the nappy treatment as a soaker in the laundry and Here I stress in the Laundry.

Hope this helps.
Best Regards and Safe Travelling.
