Dogs in National Parks

What did I say about being positive?????????
Anyway after checking through some 750 emails that had accumulated while in Sydney with ailing MIL (now had a small stroke - not so good) I recieved this GEM from the NP&WS.

"While the NP&WS appreciate that your dog may be well trained, obedient and kept on leash at all times we regret that your dog is included in the general ban on all dogs in NSW National Parks blah blah blah.... The only exemptions to the rule applies to dogs owned by and cared for by Indigenous Australians"

Well brudders I'm off to get me a button nose and dark tan....... So much for the big spiel about making some parks "dissabled friendly" apparently not even guide dogs are allowed into these places, that I reckon could be challenged in court with no effort at all.....

well I know for a fact that it is illegal to not allow admission to a guide dog and anybody that does is in dire peril from the courts, they must by law have access to WHEREVER the owner wishes to go, supermarkets, doctors offices, hospitals anywhere

if you have a hearing impediment then grab a note from your doctor and register gracie as a "hearing dog" they have the same rights and priveliges as a guide dog

unfortunately if you give a wanker a uniform (police, fireman, ranger) then he is still a wanker but NOW he is a wanker with power, they seem to congregate more in n.s.w. than in any other state and relish in pushing their percieved power around

when I was in the c.f.s. fighting alongside a couple mates in a little scrub fire that was later called "ash wednesday" we had a couple of drongoes in powerfull positions that they should never have had, didnt help when we were fighting 24 hours a day for 5 and 6 day stretches, with no respite, 5 hours sleep and back into it again, while these peanuts were in their office and had no idea what was going on we were placed in harms way,

these controllers cost us 2 units (crew escaped shaken not harmed) and a dozer (the one that I was on) they placed us in vulnerable positions with no escape route, we were given co-ordinates (we couldnt see 10 feet in front of us and couldnt breathe so we just followed gps points given to us by comp. which placed us in peril, in my case on the dozer it was a handheld

the gestapo ranger regime predominates in nsw and queensland and is upheld by fools and that is one reason I wont venture too far east of the blue mountains

We have a couple of spoilt ****atiels - Freckles and Apache, who we inend to travel with us when we eventually get going - only to have found out that they too are banned from National Parks!!

A few years ago, we were reliant on a generator ( a rather large one) to run Barry's CPAP machine and where camped at Bundjalong National park (near Ballina - and just a magnificent place to pull up camp).  Whilst there some gooses' drunken ones at that kept coming over and turning Barrys generator off.  They did it twice and the thrid time - Barry had had enough and went over to their camp, but little did we know, that the thrid time they had put water into the fuel and then we could not get it going again.

The rangers were wonderful the next day and gathered them up and sent them on their way - with a permanent ban ROFL!!

Along wth the animal ban, most NSW national parks also have a blanket ban on generators too, so off we trots to the doctors and gets us a letter for Barry to carry with him.  Each time we enter another region we have to reapply again - and this goes on and on - and we have therefore been avoiding the national parks.

November 2007 - the national parks in NSW increased their fees 100% and we have really been turned off going at all.

I guess what I am trying to say is that- for the money we are now paying and the almos total lack of services it is just bureacracy gone mad, and unless we have no other choice - we will not be going to National Parks.

Cheers

yep I agree with all that, why we have to pay for something we own in the first place and then no amenities on top, keeps me away from parks

Hi Basil and Gracie

In 2006 when I did WA coast line I wanted to go into a few National Parks, in many instances I puppy sat for others and they returned the favour the next day, good system!
But a couple of notable occasions there was no-one else around - the WA Rangers must be blessed with far more common sense/smarts than your average Ranger coz on both occasions (Kalbarri and The Pinnicles) I was told 'keep your dog in your van, and keep the curtains closed, and enjoy yourself!'
They were good to me so of course I did what I was asked (would have done anyway) I thought that was a common sense approach and cannot for the life of me see why it cannot be applied throughout Australia - Yes I know there would be people who abuse the situation, but how many people do already anyway?
Other alternitive is to have a set of kennels at entrance.

Annie

It baffles the hell out of me why no dogs in NP's anyone traveling with a dog certainly isn't going to leave it behind . Maybe if a permit system was developed where only dogs with micro chips and that are fully NP's registered before entering parks was implemented problem solved and a new source of revenue found to feed the parks managerial parasites . That way if your dog is found in the park without you and not on a leash held by you or a responsible adult then bend over here comes the hefty fine regardless of how the dog got lose.

I've heard the old chestnut they trot out every time you mention Dogs and NP's in the same sentence " the scent left by dogs terrifies the native animals" What frog **** , if they visit my local park, which boarders the NP, they will find it's absolute bull dust and is a claim without sound scientific evidence to back it up . After the local dog training club has finished in our park for the day the same area is crawling with wildlife , it doesn't seem to worry them for one moment.

You are absolutely right why should we pay to enter something we have already paid for via our tax system, especially when there is less and less each season which you can enter.

Same old story minority views get the lions share of the say while the silent majority wonder wide eyed how that happened here in Australia. It happened because we let our pollies do it to us over and over again

After a speedy response on my part threatening trial by MEDIA and then the legal system I have now got some sort of sensible response, BUT I am one of those finicky types who does not enjoy spending a day at a national park watching the few idiots who do not clean up after their dog or who let their dog roam freely anoying everyone so we do have to have some controls, yes I think some sort of permit system would be a good idea where the dog's Rego Number is recorded and details of the owner known anyway this is the response, I may be able to get Gracie certified as a trained assistance animal:

Pets policy

October 2002

Domestic pets can be a threat to native animals, and can disrupt other people's enjoyment of parks and reserves. The NPWS wants to maintain the natural environment and visitor enjoyment of these parks, while promiting equitable access to parks for people with disabilities.

The NPWS therefore provides park access for trained assistance animals, but access for other pets needs to be restricted.

When and where am I allowed to have pets in parks?

  • Trained Assistance Animals (TAA) are allowed in any park or reserve provided they are leashed, harnessed or caged (proof of TAA status required - certification available through local council offices).
  • All other pets are generally not allowed in national parks, nature reserves, karst conservation reserves, state conservation areas or Crown reserves, except when consent is given by the park manager.
  • In historic sites, regional parks, state game reserves, Aboriginal areas or acquired lands, the manager of the area may authorise a person to bring a pet subject to conditions.
  • Pet owners can take their pets through a park in a vehicle, provided that the vehicle does not stop and the pet remains within the vehicle. Pets can also be driven through a park if there is no other practical route to private property.
  • Working dogs can travel through a park if assisting in droving stock along an authorised route.
  • In Aboriginal lands, entry and use of pets by the Aboriginal owners may be permitted subject to conditions.

Where pets are permitted by the manager of a park or reserve, the person accompanying the pet should make sure that:

  • They keep pets at least 10 metres from children's play areas, barbecues or picnic tables, etc.
  • They pick up their pet's faeces.
  • They keep greyhounds and American pit bull terriers muzzled at all times.

This page only gives a summary of the policy. For detailed information please download the full policy below. The policy includes contacts and a list of relevant legislation.

Isn't the droving of stock through or on NP was considered a No No . I think the high country fiasco was a prime example of no non native animals in parks . The NPA policy is, not even horses are allow next it will be humans

We have to wonder about the term National when every state controls it's own, setting the rules by which they are run

Yes, in a word. But you may have to prove your dingo is a real dingo and not just a starved browninsh dog.... If you are an indiginous person you have carte blance, do what you like apparently.

In my case this matter has been sucessfuly resolved to my complete satisfaction. The NP&WS when I found a little loophole and got Gracie appropriatlery registered as a Trained Assistance dog category Therapy/Companion to accompany me due to my TPI status worked wonders, they fell over backwards to help me when they were fully appraised....
Still a bunch of papershuffling beaureaucrats though -  We are not allowed to go to Kosiosko in winter though as we would interfere with the sole purpose of that park in winter which is to make money....

I'm beginning to think that being conscripted was not so bad after all PMSL....

I have seen signs at a few places especially on the NSW South Coast saying that Generators are not to be run between

8:00pm and 9:00am.....
