DYI Security Lights

Does anyone know who may be a supplier of a low cost 12 volt motion detector  to set off a security light  system in an annex. I think I need a combined  device  that detects both heat and movement to avoid those false alarms when it's only the annex moving in the  wind.  Most of what I can find so far  are 240 volt  and go off if you blow your nose as they only detect movement  and a moving annex wall will do it.

It needs to be 12 volt so I can run it on it's own circuit  to avoid those low life's  who disconnect the power at the pole before coming in.

I see an alarm system in an  Caravan mag  but at the cost of  an arm and a leg  I lost interest very fast.   In most cases a light coming on will deter unwanted guests.

if you are in a park when security is an issue then why not go with an onboard battery with an automatic onboard charger running through an inverter you could then use a 240 volt system powered by battery and constantly "on charge" it would of course be kept "topped up" by the parks 240 mains

if the bad guys shut the power off then it is still on through the inverter/battery system, this battery is then a usefull item in its own right

I'm sitting in the office looking at our security control box, following the systems protected wiring, the motion detection sensor itself is only 12 volt before it runs back to the control box where the control box is 240v with 12 volt backup, wait a minute ours has a gel cell 12 volt backup so if it is able to be run off 12 volt in backup mode then it should run all the time in 12v

have a talk to a security system installer (we use chubb) or even have a look through ebay, I dont think this will be a problem for you at all

an alarm will not only frighten the thief but will alert neighbors of his/her presence and maybe someone will catch him/her, we can run ours in silent mode which alerts the coppers and displays an outside blue flashy light, you dont need all this but if you run silent and replace the blue light with a white one then you have your security light

Not really a problem if you have a Bunnings near you. They have in their "security" area battery powered alarms with usually 2 remotes that are self contained. They need no fixing at all just left on a table, they do work and scare the bejesus out of people who are not aware of their presence. Before you armed it though you would have to close all the windows because these things are triggered using infrared so any warm blooded intruder will set them off including Possums, dogs etc. The Alarm is around 120 Db and certainly will draw attention to your van. For Security lighting walk up to the electrical area of Bunnings and have a squiz at the several solar powered systems on display. They work irrespective of mains or external battery and can be set to be triggered by an intruder or turned on by switch via a remote. I have a ceiling alarm fitted and I had a similar one in my Jayco Van which saved the day in Moree where some bored kids were climbing a tree and scapering across the roofs of Vans looking for open hatches they found mine but were soon caught by some diligent fellow vanners who were not at the thermal pool.
I think each of these gadgets designed for self instalation are going to set you back around $60 - $80 each.

Dear Lord, do we really live in a country where you need to consider security alarms in your caravan annexe?
Mind you, on my last trip couple of weeks back to the delightful Guilderton caravan park about 100km north of Perth, the caretaker chappie gave me a bollocking (in the nicest possible way) for leaving my (new) Techni Ice icebox outside the van at night, saying I was lucky it was still there in the morning. Never occurred to me that it might "walk".
Might have to think about a cable running through chairs, table, etc, I suppose. Makes my angry that we have to even consider this. Cheers, Tony

Many thanks for all the info, I'll give Bunnings a walk through, sounds like there are solutions available at reasonable cost .

Your right it's sad that we have to go to such extremes to protect our gear in this lucky country. I never gave the security problems with a van much thought until my recent run in while we watched the TV and a dark relo came into the annex and unplugged the mobile phone from the external wall socket and off into the scrub before we could move.

Eskies and ice boxes are a prime target not for the tucker but the booze, the ice box normally shows up on the next tide or in the bush close by.

RE: DYI Security Lights

Hi Mike,
My wife and I love it. Lovely setting where the Moore River enters the sea, good sites, excellent ablutions block and a very good camp kitchen. A young couple have taken over management and seem to be doing a good job.
The park has recently been fitted with slabs for annexes, but they were not made from proper concrete and are starting to crumble already. Can get a bit busy at weekends, but I guess that applies most places these days.
I'm sure you will enjoy a stay there. Cheers, Tony

great place to stay  awhile and you will catch some fish at sunset from the beach.... but when swimming be careful as there can be dangerous rips as the river sweeps out to the sea. you can go for miles up river in a tinny and maybe hook a nice black bream.
