Not sure if this topic has been aired before. my question is is there a safe portable gas heater for short bursts inside a poptop, my misses is a cold fish and as we hope to do a lot of free camping and no gene with us. [gawd think of all the foot rubbing id have to do] being an x plumber i know all the pitfalls with gas, but have to think of peace lol
Wendy says im full of hot air so dosent want a hot bottle as well
danger!!! will Robinson danger!!!, danger!!!, dont even think about a portable gas heater as a space heater,
I know you are saying it is only for short bursts but if you go off to noddy land when you have it on then it will be a one way trip, lot of nomads have died doing this,
the oxygen in a van is used up very quickly, bad thing to do!! the only acceptable way is a "flued" one I.E. one that vents the gases outside and sucks new air in
having said that I know of people (and I would never do this myself and I am not advocating this in any way shape or form) that invert a 6" terracotta pot over the flame of the stove and have that going on low,
apparently the pot heats up, you turn the gas off and the pot 'radiates" heat for a while, dont know if it works as I stated I haven't done it
and I again state for you argumentative hard of hearing out there I am not advocating this, I have just heard of people doing it,
dont reply saying oohhh!! this is dangerous,
I already know so please no emails, I'm still answering the ones from my last trip

there is a very good diesel heater on the market it is made by webasto and sold under the dometic brand, it retails for around the $2 - 3,000 mark and can be self installed by a competent backyarder, eberspacher also make one

Dave, just get Wendy to put her cold feet on your legs, we're planning to leave on 4th April and we are heading into cold weather - I just get Brian to get into the bed and make it warm then I get in put my cold feet on his legs..............problem solvered!!
But I have bought some fleecy sheets - never had them before but figured they would be warmer than cotton and I have been trying to buy some hot water bottles but not been able to find any as yet.
In fact I would go as far as to say, no combustion type heater. The oxygen levels drop, and the fumes given off can be toxic. Not to mention the film left inside a confined space.
If you rug up, expecially the extremities, then no problem. Get one of those funny beanies that cover your ears, wool socks and gloves. Give the internals a good dose of a fine spirit, job done.
Heat a rock or ceramic plate, insert into a towel, and place it in the swag, before bed for a warm entry.
As a member of the Fugarwie Tribe, I use dogs, 1 to 2 dog nights - might try woman as I have heard it is the best, but they are complicated

Mate on the gas flower pot issue -no way too f'ing dangerous. Might work in a confined space but so did cyclon B. People we bought a boat off did the same thing. In a big area didn't work and forget it danger wise. Don't go there is the best advice. Stupid if anyone does.
No gas heater and I don't see a diesel powered one been much better even if vented to outside as any fuel burner vent outside or not will liberate Co into the enclosed space and over a very short time you will both be sleepy permanently.
Investigated an incident some years back where the investigators put the situation down to attempted suicide and closed the file. My department went in to checked out the door and window seals and measured the Co produced by the externally vented gas heater, surprisingly didn't take long to chew up all the oxygen in the room.
Cold feet try , hot water bottle , hot lucky stones in a bag . Never know you may get lucky yourself then you won't need an external heating source

Jeez had a feeling it would all end up like this, im having bad pictures now with no gas heater " oh no"Wendy sitting there with a beanie pulled down over her ears with teeth in a cup sitting on hot rocks then to top it, me going to bed to warm it up, her getting in with track pants and woolly jumper and then putting her cold feet in the middle of my back, no where to go as im against the wall. im going into shock MEDIC MEDIC HELPppppppppppppppppppp
sob sob and she said this was going to be the hunnymoon we never could afford to have
Have heard of the Terracotta pot exploding , Not made properley and has air bubbles in it Only way to go is a woolen doona, and if access to cp electric blanket and use a small blower heater like the "Furnace" from dick smith
the webasto heater (sold under the dometic brand) use a "heat exchanger unit" and the burnt air and diesel have absolutely no contact to the van air so thereby making it 100% safe, please see the installation process and you will see how it works
do not use any other form of "flame" heating in an enclosed place, I agree with the beanie and drinkies as well as a good fire and good freinds (no Bridgee, not THAT good), go to bed when it's cold, thats what we have been doing for close to 30 years

Go to bed warm and let nature take its course with enough bed covers, pyjamas are optional. If it's so hard to get warm, why do it the hardest, most dangerous possible way? I use a wheat bag, the type used to sooth aches and pains. I heat it in the micky wave, but I'm sure you could heat it up over the last coals and hot ashes, in a camp oven with a rack on the bottom so the bag is not in contact with direct heat surfaces. It only takes a couple of minutes to heat up, pop it into the bed, crawl in with it, and soothe those aches while you're warming up. Or......... go to a warmer climate you twit! Chase some sun. I use a blower heater which seems to be quicker than the a/c. I don't run it overnight, just to warm up the van, and me, then go to bed warm. And I'm never going to Bathurst again! Brrrrrrr. Cheers Granny
