The experts (and we all know what they are) say that as we get older we get fussier, Being reated as a senior, AND a grey Nomad, I dont think I am, My meals are simple and I accept all I am given, Judys a hell of a lot better cook than I anyway, will drink virtually any beer , ( cant tell the difference really) except when I drink on an empty stomach, have and slept anywhere, on a flight of stairs, dug a hole for the hips in the the desert sand, water bed, etc, and have no preference, (but would rather it be softer now) and like Dave will keep company with anybody, be they black white or yellow,( but steer away from loudmouths, and am also happy with own company) Having been on my own for over half my life, not counting when rearing the kids with the help of sister, I have come to the conclusion that I am a Clark Kent rather than Superman In conclusion I am not fussy, even to when I stop for the night on the road hope you are reading this my son
Typical of the experts, they probably are Yuppie single 20 somethings and wouldn't know about the quality of life we nomads have let alone the contentment of having the simple things in life.
When it's all broken down, material things and money for that matter can't buy you health or happiness. I know!!! Give me the simple things any day.

I want the dragons health, without her I'm not staying
I want a beautiful day to wake up to each morning, luckily we have that all the time here in aust.
I want good food and a good drink
I want good company and a pleasurable outlook in which to seek it, luckily we live in the most beautiful land in the world
I want all my Friends (even those I haven't met yet) to always enjoy good health, good food and good company
I dont want great swags of money, been there dont want it again, enough is enough
simple things are what give me the most pleasure, good Friends, good food and a good seat is what life is all about
take them away and I wont stay

Ditto to all the above. I have noticed fussy people are bored or set in their ways, who have nothing to distract them from their little inner life. They are sometimes retired office/suits who worked from 9 - 5 every day, to a strict schedule, and just can't let it go. That's not retirement nor a holiday. When they're setting up in the parks they don't look up. They concentrate so hard on setting up just right, while her indoors is fussing inside. It's like there's a time limit. The cuppa is made by the clock, the shower is by the clock, meals by the clock, and they talk to no one. They are also the type who leave the park as sparrow fart to get in as many miles as they can to the next destination. But they miss the point all together. Look up, look around, relax, kick back and for goodness sake, enjoy. It seems to me none of you are fussy. Being organised, neat and clean is not fussy unless it upsets and affects the people around you. That's the lifestyle of a true nomad. Cheers Chris

Thought getting right away from the 9 - 5 was what all this is about. If you are going to stick to a "schedule" forget it, you won't enjoy yourself as probably you will get upset when things don't go according to the "schedule". Life's too short to be ruled by the clock.

the only thing that I could be accused of being fussy over is seeing that the dragon is happy and comfy, I'm certainly not organised and I get up at sparrow fart for no-one although we do get up relatively early I spose, habits of a lifetime and all that
the eyes seem to "spring open' at about 6'oclock and then I just lay there, until a decent hour making out that I'm still asleep
love the description "er indoors" that is exactly correct of a lot of these people, dont know if they think they are above the rest of us or not but some just dont want to mix

Early morning is the absolute best time of the day. Sometimes it just seems like you are the only one on the planet along with the birds and other early riser animals. I enjoy the solitude of early mornings, gives you time to appreciate this wonderful country of ours and gather strength for what lies ahead for the day.

So Granny how did you get to meet My inlaws? The idea of leaving you site @ dawn is so that you can get to the next spot first to have the best site... You forget to mention the camp ground idiots and the know it all types who have to pounce on you the instant you arrive, introduce everyone, sit under your awning and suggest before you set up that a batch of scones (They have an oven Eric!) and a cuppa would be nice then they can help you set up. Then wax lyrical name dropping at every opportunity about the town and who nis bonking whom and how they saw them "doing it" on the beach and the couple in the other Corromal van are swingers (Oh what are their names and do they "play" with worn out old farts and fartesses?) then tell you how to back your van in and it really should be 6" this way or that... Oh dear me all this before I've had a chance to show them my new anti smell toilet contraption....

there is no other feeling on this earth than to get up just after sunrise, when it's still a bit chilly, first cup of coffee in hand, kneeling by last nights fire, poking the embers and stirring it back to life, billy boiling on the tripod just over the fire, chucking a bit of a eucalypt branch on just to have the smell in your nostrels, and being the only ones for miles
all the birds saying good morning, creek babbling in the background, roos still foraging in the mist, wood smoke drifting lazily through the creek bed,
then to be the first one to find the leftover chop from last night and having a chew on that for brekky before the dragon grabs it
I keep saying it, it's the simple things in life that make life worth living, thats why we used to keep on going back up to the deserts and the kimberleys, not a soul for hundreds of kilometres,
although the last time we went up we struck a heap of people so times are changing but if one looks peacefullness can still be found
the only feeling that could come close is holding your firstborn in your arms for the first time

I guess there is fussy and there is pedantic. Re Grannys post about the bored or set in their ways people she is right but this is a form of OCD, most of us have a little OCD. Some of us are the liner uppers, some of us are the cleaners, many variants. Personally though I can enjoy what ever is around for me to see or do, I can even go without TV for a few days where as poor long suffering SWMBO stresses out if she can't talk to her Rellies at least once a day, is more interested in what others are thinking or doing rather than the scenery or the sheer pleasure of nature and life around you. I am very fussy though, if I pay for something I expect what I pay for, if I book in to a 5* resort I expect 5* service. Thats not unreasonable is it? It would be unreasonable though to argue at the reception demanding a reduced tarrif as I had no intention of using the pool or other facilities. These are arguements I see constantly in letters to the editor of various caravanning magazines "We only want to pay $5 a night because we don't want to use the pool, camp kitchen, showers, toilets, look at the view we just want to stay the night" To enjoy yourself you have to let what life throws at you come and deal with it at the time. Trying to influence others behavior never works, I'm talking about the types who drive @ 80km/h in the middle of the road because they don't want you to get past them because they know the road & you don't and though it may be a 110km/h limit they think 80 is safe....

Oh Dave, The Dragon is lucky to have you, and I bet she knows how lucky she is. What a beautiful picture you paint with your words. You should write more. You do it so well. I can relate. A camp spot at Mornington in the Kimberleys. Hot showers and flushing loos out in the sticks managed by the station operators. The Conservation group of WA have taken it over and the cows have been removed. A skinny dip in the Fitzroy River at Diamond Gorge is my idea of heaven.
Now Basil, I can also relate to your comments. People will do all sorts of things to get a freebie. Arguing about services is the best way. I worked in a couple of resorts in Broome/Cable Beach, and they get them all the time. As travellers and nomads, no matter what our mode of camping, it puts us all on the same playing field. No matter if you have a swag or a 5* van, we are all equal, and I don't give a bugger what anyone thinks, but I would never set out to insult or offend anyone. I don't ever try to impress, because it's not worth it. Accept me as I am or make your own damn cuppa! But you're always welcome to join Granny, Rosy and Roma (the van). And don't ever try to impress me. I make up my own mind, or what's left of it. Happy and safe nomadding. Chris

Mostly the fussy ones I've run across are those who have only just given up work. They normally come from occupations where they were **** of the walk and can't or won't come to grips with becoming only a feather duster.
Every morning when your feet hit the floor you know you made it into another day without any difficulties and if you see the sun go down you can certainly can count your blessing that you have had a great day. Many don't see tomorrow, enjoy it while you can

What great ambassadors we all are for our country. The tourism operators would learn a lot from reading The Grey Nomads forum. Whether they be safari operators, accommodation houses or travel agents, there is so much great information about this country and it's best features. And we all do it for free. Keep the info coming. cheers Chris
