You Folk need to purchase Camps 5.I have had a good search of Camps 5.Nearest free/cheap camps are Picnic area at Currency Creek about 20 k,s nth east. Kent Reserve Picnic Area 2k's sth of Victor Harbour, via Bay Rd & Harbour View Tce.

thanks for that Gnome...as a newbie I am learning and appreciate your advice..will try and get a camps 5 book when i go to the nearest city 250 km away being out in the sticks away from no mans land is hard to try and get some things ...even harder when no one here knows what a camp 5 book is :( thanks for your advice)

Hi Escape, here is a link to order online, I am not sure if the prices include postage but you could email them, there should be a contact number there somewhere.

They are not cheap but considered the bible by most and would pay for themselves very quickly in saved caravan park fees. See;

Thank You kenmarg...I really appreciate you sticking up for me...I would really like to see the book before purchasing it also..and I cant do that if I send for it. I am a Solo Female traveller I just thought I could ask if there would be anyone that knows of any free camping near or at Victor Harbour ( Gnome.. did mention a couple of spots and I thank him for that ..I thought I could ask for this advice on this forum..but now I am not sure what I can ask for and what I can't ask for ...regards to all...

I dont know of any free camping....Deep Creek NP.....can be good
or I have been serveral times to Victor Harbor Beachfront Holiday Park...which is very good...quiet this time of the year...$25 per night powered.last time I went

escape, the camps australia 5 book is a terrific bit of kit and I will guarantee it it 100%

if you dont like it tell me and I will refund your money, this I promise, buy the one with "snaps" included, it will cost about $80 but worth every cent

Rapid Bay about 20 minutes from Victor. Not free but at $5pn its a bargain.

Camps 5 is a worthwhile investment, however I would not bother getting the one with the pictures again.

just as a footnote, if you have bought camps 5 then consider the camps 5 poi file which can be purchased as a cd or downloadable found here................. http://www.campsaustraliawide.com/

this can then be transferred to your gps under "extra's" or poi, it will immediately give you all camps in the area that you are in governed by distances starting at nearest first

it would be in your interest also to download a poi file downloader, this is of enormous help

We have now been on the road for 13mths, we started off with the Camps 4 and then bought the camps 5. I would recommend the Camps 5 book to anyone......... it is a real bible, not too sure on the picture book......... photos can be very deceiving at times.
If you want to know about free camps I think this book is a must.

I have updated the camps 5 book through the website. I was surprised on how many changes had been added and deleted.
There are always councils closing and opening sites or maybe the dump points have been changed water might not be available etc.

Apparently the Camps 6 will be out Jan 2011 I hear.

yep the book is great and recoups it's money in a couple of freebies, I prefer the photos simply because it gives a very rough idea of what the camp probably looks like, but it can be deceptive

I have placed a few in there and have tried to make the photos tell the true story!!

overall it is a very well worthwhile investment!

Hi Sandra
You will soon get used to using the Camps Book.

The way we use the Camps book is to roughly plan where we are heading then look in the book for possible camp spots in the area.

Say for example our next stop will be Narrandera NSW (map 31 G11). There are a number of camps around the town marked on the map by orange triangles numbered from 759 to 762. Turning to the NSW Sites numbered 759 to 762 (page 140 in our large photo book) shows Site 760 is the Showgrounds. The $ symbol amongst the symbols at the bottom of that listing indicates a charge whilst the other three sites (759,761,762) there is no $ symbol, so no charge

Site 759 we have used a few times and as you can see from the symbols there is nothing there (though I do recall a pit toilet) compared to the Showgrounds (No 760) which has water/showers/toilets and probably 240v hence the charge for camping.

Should have added that Site 759, Five Mile Reserve, is quite a nice spot, particularly when there is water in the creek. However it is apparently quite a popular spot at weekends and over summer.

My name is David and I am an employee of the City of Victor Harbor.

While we wish you an enjoyable and safe stay in Victor Harbor, I would advise that Kent Reserve is NOT a free camping site.

Persons found to be camping here are in breach of a Council By- Law and may be issued a fine of $187.50.

There are two caravan and camping parks nearby with excelent facilities at an affordable price. Alternatively there are national parks camping sites a short drive from town for the price of a camping permit.

Deep Creek Tapanappa Hill is spectacular and well worth the stay, as for VH, I enquired at the Big4 and they wanted $52 for an unpowered tent site, and the wonder why they dont get the grey nomad anymore.

The place as full of city folk running away from the big smoke...

Another place to stay closer to Adelaide is the Beech Woods Eco park at Aldinga, Maslins Beach. If you are into the nudie thing it s great, walking to the beach, and a powered site over the new years period was only $29 and $12 for unppowered and they are pet friendly to boot.

I don't see a Big 4 listed for VH so maybe you're referring to Port Elliot Big4. Their website quotes $41 for a powered site dropping to $32 out of school hols.

It's normal to charge extra in times of high seasonal demand to compensate for low season when parks are near empty... this is the "law" of supply and demand and the free market at work.

City folk (and country folk too) mostly have little opportunity to run away from the big (or not so big) smoke other than in peak season due to work and school commitments. Most GNs on this forum would have "been there, done that" in a previous life. After retirement we have the luxury of being able to plan around this.

I have an interest in this topic as I plan to be in the area mid-late March.

PS: just checked the Top Tourist in VH and it appears they do charge that sort of money but only Xmas/Easter. Their rates seem to be more in line with expectations for that class of park at other times of the year.

Also I have no problem with councils enforcing local ordinances that ensure that the public amenity can be shared by all, tourist and local, Caravan/RV and non-caravan/RV alike.

I think David from the VH city has done us a favour.... at least now we know!

I always preferred Goolwa! But I just checked Camps 5 and theres not much in the way of camping there outside caravan parks. Its the usual thing for any area within a days drive of a city.

The whole area is a great place for a holiday... theres wineries at McLaren Vale, beaches, fishing (the Coorong has water in it now!) If you are into bush-walking the Heyson Trail winds its way down and around the Fleurieu Peninsular. And theres all the touristy stuff in the Adelaide Hills of Hahndorf and other quaint little towns.

Best time is after the hottest of summer ... late Feb, March.
