Most informative site, very complex trying to work out who pays who in the end . Noted that helicopter services are not covered by MBF , the others didn't say anything about air services at all. Worth checking out if your covered for medivacs form remote sites or for that matter any site. At around $1000 - 1500 per hour ex hanger the bill can be rather high to get you out and to hospital.
Did a job on a beach once for a girl involved in a quad bike roll over , only because the 4WD ride was deemed to rough. That exercise costed out at $10000.00. Not Happy Jan when her parents got the bill in the mail

Thanks Xina, that answered some questions I had in my mind about this for a trip next year but hadn't asked yet. Very informative.
Like the road rules, with so many people travelling interstate these days you would think there would be a National uniform cover for all States.........maybe oneday !
Thanks Vic

Glad it was useful Guys. I printed it out so I can check it when I need to. The Ambulance section is 6 pages. There are other topics that might be useful too. Cheers, xina.
Thanks Xina. My WA ambulance membership expired while I am in Cairns. When I went to a pharmacy to renew it I got some vague looks. They pay through their power bill in this state. No wonder I got funny looks. Now, I use an SA postal address, but I'm a resident of Qld at the moment. Yes, I do have a dilemma. No I don't have Ambo membership at this stage. I think the common link is if it's emergency the ambo is free. It's also free for DVA card holders and pensioners. It does cost if the patient is transferring from home to hospital and return for ongoing treatment, ie patient tranport, unless you have membership. If you have to travel from the country to a city hospital the Patient Transport Scheme, also known as Patient Assisted Transport in WA, you will usually fly by commercial airline. Pensioners pay nothing, and if you are still working earning some income you pay the first $50 or so, depending on the state's Health Policy. If Cairns couldn't treat me then it would be to Townsville, but if not there then on to Brisbane. I used this system in June when I had to travel to Brisbance for special treatment which couldn't be done anywhere else. The Royal Flying Doctor will only attend for life-threatening injuries or illness from remote areas to the nearest major hospital. eg Fitzroy Crossing to Broome, to be stabilised, and then they take the patient on to Perth. Cattle stations and pearl farms also use this service. Some communities in the outback are perceived to receive priority treatment, but I haven't personally seen any evidence of this. More valuable information SHARED on Grey Nomads. Cheers Chris

Ran our cover past the medical adviser and she tells me that while I'm covered with DVA we are both also covered by our NRMA Membership and van insurance policy which will get us home and bring the vehicles back to where ever we are.
Must read that bit of the policy again

wombat mine is the same, travel to and from covered under insurance, if you travel to the hospital from the accident scene then that is covered under third party

Went to NRMA today just to make sure, yes we are covered to get us and the car /van home but not ambo for patient transfer or emergency pick up. I'm told by the NRMA that if it's an accident then your green slip in NSW (which was the old third party cover) has been levied placed on it about 2 years back to cover ambulances and medical treatments resulting from not at fault accidents . If just plain old sick and go into hospital and can't drive and the other half can't drive or doesn't want to pull the van the NRMA will either bring it home on a semi or send a family member to you to help get it back .
I've got the family Admin officer covered with the top Medicare cover and they tell me they cover the lot regardless of where or when she may need it . The test will come when we do need it, they will have move the goal post by then for sure.

the nrma wont cover the emergency pick up for hospitilisation but the third party compulsory (registration part) will cover the initial ambulance "pick up" from accident scene it will not cover you from inter hospital transfer, if you wish to go home or whatever
my insurance covers my vehicle and van (if applicable) to be taken home and a little for us as well
our R.A.A. covers vehicle transfers to the nearest R.A.A depot, may not get you home but it will make the van and vehicle safe, I am not sure but I think there is a little bit of accomadation in there as well
as you say all will be revealed if or god forbid we do get involved in a serious prang and we put it all to the test
