not sure on this

G'day,
just wondering if if there are any laws in having say a biggish block of land somewhere,
and when not traveling, just live in the motor home with for periods of time between travels?

hi jason.          if you look for a r.v.friendly town, somewhere out in the bush you might be ok.        ( eg )    logan council here in brisbane,is about to pass a by-law.    if your block of land is under 4000sqs     $900.00 for the application, and $254.00 a year to park your prime mover on your own block of land.     "if"      none of your neighbour's object.    i think the council has shot themselves in the foot, all the caravans, in driveways and front yards. are larger than truck prime movers.   we hope the outcry will be that large they will drop it.         so mate when things, like this are happening in citys and large towns.       you are better of to look out in the bush

Yes Milo, it is here in Sapphire ,but you dont own the block, you lease it from the mines dept,
lots of people have vans and motorhomes set up as holiday units tween travel times ,
I am one of them, and while here in the winter I dig for Sapphire
if you need the specifics email me

Most councils have rules about living in sheds, the acccptable length of time while you're building, etc.
There are similar laws about living in vans in or around the shed.
The biggest cost is connecting the electricity if it's a new shed without a previous conection.
You'd have to get clear directions from the council or shire in which you intend to set up "house". Good luck with that. Safe travelling in the meantime. Cheers Chris

Milo,

Another thing you may have to be careful of is in some states if you don't have a home on it (eg; WA as far as I know), when the time comes to sell you could be hit with Capital Gains tax, not to mention your land rates while you have it etc.

I assume you have some money on hand from the sale of your home? Might pay to check with the Tax Dept, I think if you don't buy another home within 12 months it is then classified as an asset a can affect any pension you get, but you would need to check that out.

If I didn't have to worry about any assets or had a way of handling it so I wouldn't be affected too much I would do what Granny does, live in a caravan park when not travelliing, may sound dear but when you add everything up (also get cheaper rates long term) it's not a bad way to go, also you are not stuck to one area or caravan park, do your living time where you want to anytime you want a sea/land change.

hi again jason.                 i am trying to remember, where i saw a article about a bloke with a motorholme, that is trying to do the same thing.           he bought a big block of land on the bruce highway at gin gin,  ( about 5 hours driving north of brisbane.)  he had a blog all about his experiences, while building.         then i see a advert about a site where you can store your r.v. at gin gin.    i wonder if its him.????   a man with a long range plan.

less than $500 a year rental for a block here, on a 5 year lease, cheaper than a caravan park, invest your capital ( rates are on the way up) and lose nothing while here

Now we have alerted the Local Government Association there will be a whole raft of new legislation to squeeze another dollar out of the land owner.

In some areas when outside want is deemed to be the town limits you can do almost anything. However, as mentioned when you need to connect services like power that's when you draw the crabs over waste disposal and other environmental issues to numerous to state here . Even if you get the power on and only live there 4 months of the year you will get a light bill water rates and waste disposal every 3 months irrespective if you use them or not . Here in NSW if its available in your area/ street you get a bill irrespective of you having a connection to the service.

In town areas or even on the fringe there is a set period to build or complete the building to occupation stage. This rule was to stop the old half houses going up and the remainder of the block becoming a market garden. Western Sydney had heaps of such dwellings
