a little surprise for unca Dave

knocked off for the day, went out to the shed, sat down with a cuppa to count my blessings

heard a little rustling, scuffling, scraping sound, looked down between my legs and a 6' - 7' king brown was looking back, he would have been a good 2 1/2" maybe 3" round, a big barstard!! oh dear!!

I thought, self you're about to die!!,.............. you're right self!! I said

do you reckon it will hurt said I,..... buggered if I know, probably.............. I said to me

we sat looking at each other for a good ten seconds, felt like an hour, he poked his tongue out at me, so I returned the gesture, he kept staring at me, I stared back at him, I thought if I move I'm gone, so we just stared at each other, my legs said, get me out of here but the poor old brain says now lets not be hasty

he poked his tongue out again and calmly slithered out the doors, about ten feet away he stopped turned around looked at me again then turned and headed for the scrub

well self I said, thats something you dont see everyday!! one for the books!!

well I'm not the bravest chook in the shed but I thought one movement and I'm history, but by hell staring into those little black beady eyes every fibre of my being was screaming out RUN!!

I dont think my legs would have worked anyway!!

and the way he stared back was as if to say go on I dare you, there was no fear in his eyes, not that one could tell,

the only time I felt that much fear was when the croc lunged out of the water at me up north

i just sat there for a while and finished my cuppa and put that one down to another strange day

yes fly it's snakey time again apparently!! watch out for them

Yep. hottest August on record here. Spotted first full grown r.b black snake near our dam about 3 weks ago, so their out early. Think Mike's dog chased one just recently didn't he ?
I was always led to beleive that they reacted to vibration mainly and would slither away before you got near them (black snakes i refer to). Daughter got to within one step of it before it went.

Congratulations Dave. The reason most people get bitten, is because they try and frighten off, or kill whatever snake they see. Unless it has been stirred up before you see it, most snakes will go away if they're exit is not blocked,  if you remain calm and still.
Cheers,
xina.

Your legs and brain did you a favour today Dave. They don't mean us any harm, it's only defence when they bite. But bloody hell you done good.
Now about those jocks. Seems that situation is also under control.
Being face to face with something we have been taught is the enemy is a very cold feeling.
The closest I have been is when a brown slithered across my foot as I put it down to take the next step. Only a matter of timing really, my foot down first or on the snake.
Someone was looking after me that day.
Mind you, the bloody thing was pretty cranky after one of the station hands chopped its tail off with the long handled spade. Cheers Chris
