Any brand, make or model caravan to avoid?

Hi
Big thanks to all you great people who reply to posts.Unfortunately being a newbie to this i can only contribute questions at this stage.Hopefully that will all change early in 2010.

But in the meantime im getting more and more confused by all the choices out there.I think that's the problem with the internet sometimes its information overload. When i was a kid my dad and i went camping in the 1960 VW beetle  a couple of tarps foam esky and fishing rods we had a ball.

Anyway back to my reason for this post, are there any makes, brands to avoid?I have heard a few negative comments about Jayco vans mainly from dealers who don't sell them etc.But with so many around i guess someone will allways complain.

I'm looking for a second hand caravan 20' minimum shower toilet air con etc have seen a lot on eBay for around $35,000 mark. But then what layout works best etc have been told the air cons in caravans are so loud you cant sleep and are better of with the heat etc. its a never ending choice ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH confuse

Thanks Stefan

Hi Stefan,  We are onto our second Jayco, this time a Discovery with shower and toilet.  Our first one a Penguin was absolutely great.  No problems whatsoever just upgraded for a bit more comfort.

I think the negative comments on Jayco come from the fact that there are way more of them on the road than any other brand so naturally you will have more comments on them, be they good or bad.

I think it's a matter of personal choice and finances that probably dictate which brand you go for.  Also depends on what you require.  If you want all the bells and whistles then naturally it's going to cost you more.

When it's all said and done its a matter of what you feel you need as opposed to what you may want.

Thankfully we checked out all plumbing and electrics before we bought our Jayco and so far no problems and everything is where it should be.  Guess we must be one of the lucky ones............well so far anyway.

Hi Stefan,
I very new to this forum and others as well, as to choice of van, I think it up to what you like the layout etc    weight that your tug can pull,   we just brought 2004 Jayco Heritage 19.61.4  just a few inches under 20ft   corner shower   other corner  toot   and very happy with it  , have just yanked it from the Shoalhaven to Perth only drama was the wind      lots of people seem to put Jaycos down    but we very happy with ours

Just as I said. Anecdotely and from what I have seen from others on the road, they are to be avoided. I was SPEAKING to a bloke only a fornight ago who said it took 11 months to get his Warranty problems sorted out - and he was not even modifying his 'Van - eg. fitting decent Solar, installing power efficient lights, etc - not virtually not even starting to be self-sufficient.
Now, I'm not being judgemental, just passing on what I have heard/learned/seen. If someone wants to buy ANY type of newish 'Van then all I say is go in with eyes wide open - extra wide. And to me, anyone who goes on the road without being self-sufficient to a certain degree has got rocks in their head - and they're is NO Caravan/RV for that matter that comes off the assembly line that will suit an individual's needs. They ALL need modifying a bit as time goes by. As panels/walls come off to do these Mods is when the truth comes out.

Michael.

Jayco's plumbing and electrical meet or in all cases that I have seen exceed the australian design standard the same as any manufacturer must do, if you were to physically examine each and every one of any vans interior gut then I doubt there would be much difference between any of them

I would buy a Jayco in the blink of an eye, i have worked on a lot of them and there are a hell of a lot of them out there

the fancier ones dont make it this far north, mostly Jayco's

If build quality is of concern then I'd stay clear of Olyimpic.... In the one we had it was very poorly finsihed, power points on the walls at any angle other than plumb and square, shower that leaked after several trips under warranty... The chassis on ours which was a "Preston Chassis" had broken welds after 2 years so we sold it.

Stefan, one comment I'd offer is that if you buy new with a warranty buy a brand that is sold within an easy commute to your place of residence. I bought a Coromal and I'm extremely happy with it and fortunatley all the warranty issues have been sorted locally but if I had toed the Coromal line I'd have had to tow it from Canberra to Nowra or Richmond for any warranty work.
Next we'll be debating timber vs Aluminium frames....
One other thing too and that is the Vans made with the fibreglass/foam/aluminium sandwich can be difficult and expensive to repair in the event of accident.

Stefan any further doubts about Jayco can be taken up within the Jayco owners group, easily found on the web

I will state that I have no affiliation with Jayco I just think it is a good product at a reasonable price and does not deserve to be run down as much as they are, I see a hell of a lot of them out here

Hi
Well i have read so many forums and after what i have read the top 10 makes to avoid ...well jayco seems to take all top ten spots and as they say word of mouth is the best or worst advertisement. The compliments are far outnumbered by the complaints against Jayco.Yes i realise there are more Jayco's then other vans on the road. But if they sell so many you think they would get things right !Or is Jayco the Microsoft of the Caravan makers? lets put it out there and let the buyers sort out the problems for us ?
