Just watch a programme on television.  Allan......a GN?.........fell in his caravan, broke his hip, drove 300ks towards Eucla.  He was driving as he couldn't move to get out of the drivers seat to let his wife drive.

Made it to Mundrabilla where the Ambulance met him and his wife and took him to Eucla Medical Centre.

Next day police stopped the traffic in both directions on the highway so the RFDS could land the plane and air lift Allan to Kalgoorlie Hospital.

Thought at the time, hope these people have medical insurance would cost a packet.

Outcome was good and Allan and wife are back on the road. 

Can't keep a good traveller home.

I agree that he must have a high pain threshold to be able to get from the van to the car and then drive all that way!!  Don't know if I could do it smile

I once had need of the services of the RFDS.
There will be no account........

All travellers should support the RFDS.
It is an iconic and valuable service to all those who live or work in remote areas.

About 25 years ago i met an old bloke called Bill in Andamooka he was a profilic fund raiser for the RFDS.
I spent a bit of time at Woomera and we would often call into his Ettamogah Pub for a drink, always port served in vegimite jars and a coaster to stop the flies landing in it.
Wouldn't accept money for the drinks just a donation via the old punchboards.
He would get around in a long nightshirt and boots with no laces, quite a character.

The RFDS is free to emergencies, thanks to all those donations and fundraising efforts. Ambulance membership does not include RFDS.
I also saw that poor bugger with the hip. It only hurt when he moved. It must have been hell getting out of the driver's seat. Heaps of oxygen I reckon.
Some of the ambo membership rules vary from state to state, as I found out in Qld. My ambo membership expired, and I hunted everywhere to renew it.
It's included in their one of their service charges, and so by virtue of being a resident of Qld, I'm covered, and as it happens, have had to use the service once.
Sections of the highway across the nully are clearly marked and cleared for those emergencies.
