We are planning our Tassie trip for Feb. 2010.  While you are handing out the advice for Wombat Chris and Robbie, we would appreciate your input as to free camps around Tassie as well.

Hi Ma,There are lots of free camping in Tasmania. After getting of the Spirit there is a great camp spot at Latrobe behind Wells Supermarket it is about 10 minute drive, (Lovely spot by the river)around 30 minutes is a must see place called Sheffield this is a town of murals and there is a park there Oneils Reserve where you may camp, Deloraine is around another 30 minutes away and is a very pretty place called the Deloraine Rest area(near the police station) Around another 20 minutes away is a place called Westbury ,The camp is behind Andys Bakery opened 24 hours and no calories LOL I could not find a free park at launceston but Longford is only a 25 minute drive South Esk Lions Park From Longford maybe to Campbell Town (50 minute drive)Campbell Town Rec Camp Ground.
Campbell town to Oatlands (1 hour Drive)Lake Dulverton Rest Area Oatlands to Hobart around 70 Minutes, There is a small charge to stay at the Glenorchy Showgrounds .This is close to all the attractions in Hobart,Hobart to Port Arthur Approx 2 hour drive (Stinky Bay or Tas Ex Services Club)From Port Arthur either East or West Coast. Both are very different. At triabunna Camp site for gold coin donation(Spring Bay Hotel)There are lots of free camps up east coast Swansea(Mayfield Bay)St Helens has six. On the west coast There are 10 at Roseberry and 2 at Zeehan Then there is also a Camp site at Helliyer Gorge,Roads on West are a bit hilly but not to bad if you drive carefully,ok to pm for more info

great place with plenty of freebies, c/parks are very ordinary except the one at port arthur but there are a lot of free camps, we spent two weeks there recently and only two nights at c/parks, not one freebie was a dud! all beautifull, hard place to come home from

a lot of cmca motorhome freindly towns, grab camps 5 and you cant go wrong

there are plenty of freebies not mentioned in either edition that we found whilst we were there but the ones that are covered in these editions are nothing short of spectacular and very hard to leave especially lake burbury (not the boat ramp one but the council one a bit further on, it has loo's and a fantastic veiw, small charge but well worth it, watch the mossey ground, can be boggy after rain, stick to the gravel road, fish in the lake as well so I was told) and Bradys lake cant be forgotten for it's absolute beauty

steer clear of the launceston c/park, very grubby but do visit cataract gorge and ride the chairlift, remember I said to "lift your feet", you will know what I am talking about when you get on the lift

I could prattle on for hours about the free camps in Tassie (there are roughly 270 of them and all worthy of note) but I wont, we find Tassie a very hard place to keep away from

if anyone has the camps 5 book then there is a program that can be downloaded at a cost of $19.95 called camps 5 poi file, this basically puts all the camps in this book into your GPS' I did it a while back and it is fantastic, I have used it many times

Hi Ma Been doing a little more homework for you and come across this, Just type into search engine around oz and click onto smoko spots and it lists lots of free camps around Australia including Tasmania, Is well worth a look, Includes pictures as well

Have a wonderful trip to Tassie Wombat and Ma.... Our Tassie trip was in February, and we found the whole island jam-packed with Grey Nomads from the mainland. We usually like to wander where and when we please, but found we needed to book ahead, as the C/P's and other accommodation were all very busy. Even the free parks that we found looked to be chocka. We still had a wonderful time, and we are planning our next Tassie trip for December, when (we were told) its much quieter with fewer tourists, although the days are long and its beautiful.
If you are into wildlife, an attraction not to be missed is the penguin viewing evening at Stanley... nowhere else did we have penguins walking over our feet!
