Buying From Overseas

Hello Fellow Nomads,
I would like to buy a Cast Iron Dutch Oven but can not buy Australian Made. Have  checked with Furphys Foundrys that used to make one in Australia.
But like every thing else, they import them now. Got on to an  Amercian company called Lodge. Contacted Lodge and they said it would cost $300 altogether.  Any ideas how to get it done better.

                              John.

Boots Outdoors have cast iron dutch ovens with tight fitting lids.  Don't know if they are Australian made but come in at less than half of what you have been quoted John.

They also have a good range of frypans, skillets and sausepans.

I'm sure I've seen this sort of product in the Aussie disposal stores. I bought my cast iron skillet there a couple of years ago. They had a range of cast products. give them a look.

I think we still have furphys here in our c/van and camping shop, and I reckon I seen them in echuca a couple of months ago!

the foundry website is here.........http://www.furphyfoundry.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=5&category_id=11&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=3

orders can be taken and despatched from that

and there are three here on ebay.......http://shop.ebay.com.au/i.html?_nkw=furphy+oven+&_cqr=true&_nkwusc=furphy+campoven&_rdc=1

I have had my filthy little mongrel for quite a while and it is still in "new" condition, although disgustingly black

Same with mine Dave, if you get the chance go to Shepparton and have a look at how they are made, along with the water tanker, they are an Australian Icon,
And all campfire MUST be black, its a cardinal to scrub any billy or to remove dents etc, one day I'll take a pic of the cooking gear Ive had for years

Hi ,
To all that answered my post about a cast iron oven Furphys do not make them they import them.
Lodge well price to import them to much for a one off.
But did get on to a Australian Company that makes them in Castlemaine Victoria.
They are called BillmansFoundry.Com.Au.

Thank You Roamin John.

I'll check up on that when I get some time and get back to you, if furphys are indeed importing their famous ovens then this is a national tragedy and well worth a news story!
