VITAMIN B

Somewhere on the forum, I think it was Zina, said something about mozzies and midgies biting and that Vitamin B was a bit of a deterent.

I am here to tell you .......YEE Ha...........Vitamin B works.

I am the mozzies favourite meal and after taking two Cenovis Megga B's every morning, here I am in Townsville with not one bite......as yet.

I have probably spoken too soon but it seems to be working at the moment.

Thankyou, I think Zina, if not then thankyou whoever you are.

Ma

I took vitamin B my first trip north Ma and not a bite, second trip I didn't bother. I ended up on antibiotics from the mess they made of me, that was from midgies.

I won't go without it next year when I leave thats for sure. smile

G'day,
Vitamin B1 appears to work the best for us, tried the mega B to no avail but the B1 did the trick.

Horses for courses I believe.

What is in the B1 thats different JRH? I can't remember what mine was at the time, I know I didn't take them the next trip because I find they keep me awake a fair bit. But I will be next time, sleep or no sleep.  smilesmile

Don't think the Vit. B thing was me Ma. I've never used it. I prefer either Dettol/Baby oil mix, or Eucalyptus oil on a pillow case for Mossies etc.
Cheers,
xina.

I've used Mega B since 1996 when I first learned I was going to the Kimberleys.
I take it in the morning only. Works for me.

The flies used to drive me crazy during the day when I sweated out as much as I drank. As soon as the droplets appeared on my brow the flies came in for a drink, and I spent more time using my hands to "shoo flies" than actually working.
By chance one day I washed my face off under the garden tap, and the flies went away.
It seemed the water washed off the perspiration and consequently the flies had nothing to feed on.
So even if you're just out camping and the flies hang around your eyes and moisture producing body spaces, just wash with fresh water. It actually lasts long enough to give some peace.
The baby oil, dettol and citronella brew is also very successful in the long term, especially around the ankles and the neck and shoulders. I don't put it on my face because if I perspire it runs into my eyes and it stings like the devil.
I also burn citronella oil in my hurricane lamp around the camp. Man against beast.

G'day Firefly,

Sorry for the delay in replying but I have had a few 'puter problems over the last couple of days, got it working again but it is not 100% good, still working on it, hoping I don't have to format.

B1 is just Thyamine, you can buy them at the chemist or at the health food shop, cheaper at the chemist so we buy there.  By all accounts the midgies, mozzies etc. do not like the smell of Thyamine so they leave you alone.  We take one tablet morning and night for the first 3 days and then just one in the morning thereafter, this works for us.

If you take too many or overdose the only problem is it makes your water smell as any overdose is expelled through the urine.

Regards and hope you have a great day.

John

Thanks for that John. In '06, I started on them six weeks before we left but by what you say, it will kick in a lot quicker than that, I will buy some soon so I don't forget which ones.  biggrin

Very interesting thread. Rosemary is a prime target for mozzies even when there are none around, well none bothering me. She takes vit B but not sure which one but will have a look and see if they are B1. Thanks for the info.

I take 1 Mega B every morning. As well as deterring the midgies and mozzies, it covers a few other bases probably depleted by all the drugs I have to take to stay upright.

Peace man - cooool brother. More dope, keep the dope comin'. Real cooool man .....

All medication, but by the look of the pill shelf in the van you'd think I was sellin' the stuff.
