First off hello everyone on here, have been cramming everything about motorhomes lately. Not yet taken the leap and bought one, but have a question if someone could answer. What are the disadvantages of a front wheel driven motorhome and a rear wheel drive one. Have been around to the nearest Jayco dealer and have been looking at the Conquest 23 footer. Just a bit of my Bio, I am 56 years young and the wife is 54 and she is the one who has been prodding me to get a motorhome and go out and see a lot of Oz that we haven't yet seen and would like to before it's too late. We wouldn't sell up the house as we would or the wife would like something to come back to when age finally catches up to us and are no longer able to travel. We are just about to celebrate 34 years of marriage this Dec 5th (who says us blokes can't remember anniversaries, eh). Anyway this is a bottler of a Forum and I just about have read everything in here and love stories of other people tales while on the road.

Hi Joebee,
Welcome to the forum, you will find that everyone has there own idea of what is better. Our motorhome is a converted bus that suits us fine plenty of room inside and lots of storage in the boot and bins on the sides. Being front wheel drive or not would not make much of a difference as far as driving it goes.

I will have a go at this question, and see where it goes.

The main difference for front wheel drive is that they 'pull', hence a slightly different handling than 'normal'. Tend to oversteer.

The next is everthing mechanical, is compacted in a small space, making things that much more of a degree difficult to repair, let alone see. You do have a flat floor though.

Compacting as they do, the mechanical bits that is, means they are also limited to the power plant size (engine).

Generally, I would think there would be little differences. I would though go RWD, as the resale and repair aspect would be better.

The last point I would make, is were I am at, with no resolve yet. How big?? is big enough. No answer to that one yet.

Front wheel drive MHs can sometimes have a traction problem, on wet grass for instance.
Much less of a problem with rear wheel drive.

If you are considering to tow anything dont go a front drive.

as said , traction can be a  problem at any time , but with a tow it is much worse,

also tyre wear is heavey with front drive.

If the 23ft is front drive i would not touch it , to much weight to pull from front .

dont know if I can add anything here, all been said,

front wheel drive not good for traction in unstable conditions, true but then almost any motorhome is as well, dont go near wet grass or sand or mud with any of them unless it is four wheel drive, we have trouble with little blue in those conditions

compact under bonnett area, yep absolutely hope you never have to work on them, but those that do dont mind them too much

towing, yep not real flash but then any large underpowered vehicle is not real good

personaly I like the isuzu range of motorhomes, the npr 250/350/450 series always tickled my fancy, they are a truck first and a motorhome second

if I was going full time that would have been my weapon of choice
