We retire next year August, as mentioned previously on forum. My dilema is this, we own a beautiful 3 year old fox terrier. My husband just adores it! It rules our house much to my dilema. Don't get me wrong I love him also, just I feel there is a place for pets at meal times- NOT BEING FED AT THE TABLE when we eat. I also have to share our bed with him as hubby wants him to be comfortable! It goes on and on, everything for the dog. I'm sure if we were both drowning in a river hubby would hesitate to consider who to rescue first. I am not a dragon as some of you guys might be thinking. I just, after 47 years of working want to travel around Oz forever- BOTH WANT TO! by the way, without the responsibility of children or family (children being "Fella "our dog) I want to be able to visit National parks and the like without all the fuss that is going to go with travelling with a pet. Don't want to share my bed with anyone but hubby who will fill most of it anyway! Am I being thoughtless? I don't feel so, surely we can find a loving old couple who will share their bed with him as we do and love him to death like my hubby does without me having to go through this in my retirement? I would appreciate any constructive assistance on how to go about this drama either way- travelling with or without our pet. Cheers for now Dawn
I had it all worked out Dawn....... right up until you said "constructive assistance".......now I'm buggered!!
Mate............that is very hard. That is something that you and hubby have to work out. He is obviously devoted to the dog and it would deeply upset him to lose it.
Can you talk him into boarding the dog for a short while while you do a short trip and then a longer trip etc....Maybe slowly wean hubby off the dog?? He may just find that life on the road may be better without the dog.
By the same token........take the dog with you for a short trip and then a longer trip etc etc.........and you just might find that it isn't as bad as you are feeling at the moment about it.
Life is all about compromises as you would already know after all these years of marriage.
Or........board the dog when you want to go into National Parks. Most major centres have kennels.?? Just a thought.
Try solo travelling?? J/K LOL

Dawn.I feel so sorry for you and know just how you feel.I am a dog lover(no Disco, don't dare)and my wife shares you sentiments entirely because I tend to be selfish with our dog Wally, although he does not eat at the table or share our bed. When we go away we don't use National Parks because of the dog but he makes up for most of the things we foresake for him by the love and affection he shows us.We do have a lady with a boarding kennel not far away who charges $10 per day for boarding,we have found with her if we are to be away for a period she will organise a great price. As you have mentioned you would lke some constructive advice or comment,Dawn I think that you will find that most dog lovers will say take the dog with you but modify his eating and sleeping habits.I am afraid that you are in a no win situation unless you are prepared to be parted from Fella.Basil and Dave O may have some words that will help you. There are many dog lovers on the Forum and I am sure that a solution will be found.Good luck in the meantime and thank you for sharing your ache.Cheers.Ibbo.
Dawn I'm so sorry but with me it's a case of "love me, love my dog" or in my case two dog's, I wouldnt contemplate life without them and if the dragon and the dogs were drowning then I hope she could float a while cause I'd have the dog's first (quick look around to see that the paddock is clear)
I'm sure that hubby will go into "withdrawall" if you take his mate away and it may not be as bad as you think to take him with you (dog not hubby)
there are a lot of places that a dog can be taken now, parks and c/parks a lot of places welcome them, but in the end the pair of you must be happy in your forever after
talk to your hubby, explain to him what is going on in your mind, work it out between you, we can advise and try to help but the ones that have the final decision are you, you pair must live with your decision
we say "oh dear" then go on to another subject but you are left holding the baby!
if you have read any of my posts you will know my thoughts on this, but I'm not going to go into a tirade about it because it comes down to a personal decision and besides my meds seem to be working today!!
Dawn, that dog loves you and your husband with every fibre of it's being, it would sacrifice it's life for either of you without thinking twice. So to even consider leaving the dog behind is, in my book a very big no no. Please think long and hard before you make a decision.

We lost our dog earlier this year and as a result I ended up shaking hands with Blackdog for a while there. I simply cannot understand how anyone could contemplate abandoning (because no matter how you sugar coat it that is what it comes down to, abandoment) such a wonderful friend simply because it has become an inconvenience is beyond me.

I live and travel alone, but I love most animals. I try to pat other peoples' dogs when they're around. Maybe you could discuss the table manners of the dog and the sleeping arrangments, to sort them out before you leave home. I don't like animals at the table at meal time, and I'm not into dogs sleeping on my bed either. I used to have a cat which decided where it would sleep - above my head on the pillow. No matter how many times it got thrown off the bed it always came back. Get the dog one of those lovely doggy beds to sleep next to your husband's side of the bed. Leaving the dog behind might be asking too much of both of them. While it seems a minor issues, it sounds like it could become a biggy before long.

hi dawn do your self a big favour get rid of the dog nothing but a pain in rear when traveling. restricts where you can and can't go. if hubby insists on dog may be time to get rid of him. if he insists on dog go tavel by your self you will probably enjoy it more any way. before any one starts i traveled with dog for over ten years, no i don't dislike dogs just know from experience what it is like to travel with one. just my 2 cents worth al
Hi Dawn We have a small 2yr old Lahsoapso we wont go any where without him. But he is trained from the firs day we got him as a puppy, No eating at the table & he sleeps under the van table in a basket, You just have to be strickt with some things. With dogs YOU are the leader of the pack, they will still love you for that, but you must be firm. Havent had any trouble with national parks yet dog stays in vehicle, if there is aprob ide move on. Enjoy your dog I wouldnt be withot Axle Cheers Daryl.
Gee Duckie, dont you know anything about lahsoapso doggies.Come to think of it nor do I.Only problem I ever had with National parks gestapo dudes was at BarringtonTops, smarty pants told Wally the Staffy he was welcome into the area but the Dude he had with him was'nt.Why I asked?because first of all he replied with "slight sneer I may add,"the dog is micro chipped, has all his jabs,he obviously is a pedigree with fine breeding. So I said with due concern whats wrong with me?Mate we can't have you non desexed types running wild in the park oogling our protected speciecs{thingys}.I thought he meant Glousester RSL.Cheers.Ibbo.
UUmmmmmm...........how did he know you weren't desexed Ibbo

G'day. Please keep your dog.Dogs love unconditionaly. Having said that I haven't done a long trip with ours yet. We are starting the lap next June/July and anywhere that dont want our dogs dont want us. I realise that this may cause a problem from time to time but we will work around that. Our's are small dogs. One is a ****zu/malteese male the other is silky terrior/something small female. Both are desexed and micro chiped.Their inoculations are up to date. Some times I think those in charge of National parks are up them selves. What harm can a well restrained dog do? Even when we walk our dogs here we always have the necessary to take their dropings home. Cheers Jack Cherie and the four legged kids.

Those who travel with pets say things like "I don't go anywhere without .......". Fact is there are many places that they simply don't go to. Pets are a major constraint to travel. Fact. It is up to each person/couple/family to work out their own priorities. No advise can be useful until that fundamental decision is made, then you can consider the options for making the best of the compromise that you selected.
unfortunately that is correct to a certain degree, but the actual truth is that we cant just wander anywhere we "wish to" anyway, having a pet merely restricts very slightly the places we are allowed into
if you are travelling by van and car and you are staying on civilised roads and meeting other people you will quickly find folks who are travelling with beasties many and varied who are more than willing to help
if you are camped and you wish to go into a beastie restricted area then simply ask one of your new found friends to mind fido while you go and have a squizz
you will of course return the favour when asked
the restrictions I would see as being very small, the rewards of having the beastie with you is very high, inconvenience low
but you must make the decision, no-one could or should talk you in or out of taking said beastie along
excuses for and against can easily be pushed aside by another equally good argument, for or against, many places are allowing beasties in now and many more are following suit
that is not the question
the question is do you wish to take the beastie, we cant answer this for you, only you must decide!!
Dogs are a pain travelling to everybody else. Dog owners look after their dogs for the first day at a campsite then after that let them roam. Dog owners never pick up the doggy doo and let dogs roam and pee everywhere over everybodies vehicles and equipment. Dog owners are only considerate only to themselves and bugger everybody else. Dog owners disobey laws designed to protect others and the environment by trying to sneak them into national parks and other places dogs are forebidden for all the right reasons. Dogs preclude you from doing so much. Many people we have met travelling have shipped their dogs home. Thankfully fewer parks are accepting dogs and when we book in make sure we tell them under no circumstances do we want to be bothered or pee'd upon or walk in other peoples dogs doggy doo's. Even considering travelling around Australia with a dog and missing out on all the wonderful national parks and other locations that forbid dogs would mean you would miss out on some of the best sights and experiences of this great country. Dogs have their place and it is not annoying other travellers because dog owners are the most conceited blind individuals who don't see the nonsense their dogs create and fail to see them crapping all over the place to avoid picking the crap up.
well Martin I bet that will be spoken about around a few dinner tables tonight, if i were at home your thoughts would be the centre of conversation, for about two seconds
it will certainly spark some retorts in here I'm betting
my experience has been that more places are actually beginning to see the need for dog freindly accomadation and far from areas shrinking due to doggys it is in fact an expanding market
I have honestly yet to be bothered by some one elses dog or cat or budgie, but we have only been travelling for around 40 plus years so I guess there is time yet, I enjoy pets and I enjoy folk who enjoy pets
far from pet owners being horrid nasty people who cant wait for the doggy to poop on your doorstep I find pet owners to be the most gracious freindly outgoing and well balanced of all people,
perhaps if you are being piddled on it may be in your interest to involve a little movement in your daily ritual it is obvious the doggy is mistaking you for a permanent fixture, a flagpole possibly???
A thousand Duck Poos on your front door step, Martin.!!.......................hang on............does that include ducks??
Brickies.........I don't think the RSPCA would care one way or the other as long as the dog is well fed, well looked after and appears happy...............and is allowed to poop on the foot path and piddle in your van!!
