We couldnt resist the helicopter flight there, to fly @ 500Ft we had to wear life jackets & the chopper had inflatable skids just in case they said & they even weigh you. Well worth it though.  Daryl

Totally agree Daryl.  It was my first ever helicopter ride and it was the best experience.

500 ft was definitely the way to go and the perspective from off shore is so much different to that when you are on the ground.

Wouldn't have missed it for the world.

The only drawback was that they DID  weigh you.   I could have done without that bit......laughing.gif

Just visited your website and had a look around. Pretty jolly good ! Very clever site.
Had a listen to your radio show also. Good taste in music there.

I haven't "done" the Great Ocean Road but I'm planning to go that way sometime after the current school hols and before Easter. I'm open to suggestions re the best caravan parks to stay at and the "must-sees".

We stayed at the Port Campbell C/P and found it to be really nice, clean and friendly and within walking distance of the little township.

A must do is of course the helicopter flight.

Guru did the Ottway Fly tree top walk which is on the southern approaches to the GOR and found that was thrilling.  Not for this little yellow chick though.

Apart from those two, we just went into every carpark we found along the way and then walked.  Usually easy access by foot and nothing too strenuous.

Mind you most of the best attractions we feel are on the southern end of the road.

I can't recall exactly where, but at the eastern (northern??) end there is a rain-forest walk which is definantly a 'must do'.  It may even be before the official start of the GOR.
This would be as close to Daintree as you could get on the south of Oz.

The Sow and Piglets. (12 Apostles) the boss is 1/2 way through painting this picture.

The Otway Fly was good, but not a pinch on Maits Rest where you are down amongst it,
near Apollo Bay, but parking was limited, don't think you could get a van in there, from memory.

Jim it's a must do, the folks we are with have lived in melbourne for the past 15 years and were always "going to do it" as yet never had so I just said lets go, hell its only just down the road, I drove hundreds of K's to see it the last time we did it

the fly is a must do, as is the rainforest behind the road, most of the c/parks are good we never struck a bad one when we went through last year, we tended to mainly stay in the freebies which abound north of the road itself, fantastic spots, if anyone wnats to know where they are take a look in camps 5 or pm me and I will tell you, john, maits rest is stunning

we couldnt go to far off the highway this time owing to time constraints, it was mainly to show the folks the great ocean road, the drive itself is one of the worlds great and should be done by everyone

we leave tommorow morning at sparrow fart for a bit of adventure, our other friends wont tell us exactly where they live but made it into a game, they have supplied a set of gps points, I know their house and property is outside of newcastle somewhere around cessnock

they have provided 5 "waypoints" which they reckon is a beautifull way to get there so we will see

Narrawong Van Park, on the western end between Pt. Fairy and Portland.
It's almost surrounded by a river, and backs up to the beach.
A pretty spot, good value, a short drive 20kms to Portland.

Dave, if you are coming up the coast road then PM me and I'll let you know where we are.  Our back door is only 10mts off the Princes Highway.

I will keep the kettle on the boil and some coldies in the fridge.

Can recommend Princetown C/P...theres also a cheapie campground (or maybe even  freebie) down the hill from there,  but they were flooded when we looked in March last year. Theres a good view, plus a boardwalk across the Gellibrand Wetlands from the C/P to the beach....makes a nice change from limestone coastal formations. And the Princetown Pub does GREAT fish'n'chips!!!

Definitely one of our most enjoyable trips!smile

So, DD, where did you park to do that? Anywhere near the GOR?
That wasn't very nice of the Policeman to offer you "a bag" at that particular time? Did you get her name?
