Hi, we're Barry & Cate, a married couple in our late 40's, who have made the decison to become Grey Nomads in the not-too-distant future.
We've joined this forum so we can begin our research, taking advice from the experts, ie, you guys as you're the lucky ones who are already on the road !
We will be travelling with our two little Pugs, 'Tiddly Winks' and 'Yum-Yum' so we're really keen to get all the guff on travelling with our beloved fur kids.
We will also be seeking advice on which motor home is the most trusted and respected, whether or not to sell up our home and if being vegetarian is going to pose any problems for us in relation to acceptance as we don't partake in the usual grey nomad activities, such as fishing etc.
We look forward to conversing with you all and perhaps meeting you on the road one day.

Welcome Barry and Cate... dont worry about diets! I gotta have a certain diet, and that led to our choice of camping and caravanning instead of motels, in order that I can prepare my own dinners. Cheaper too. And you meet really nice people!
Hi Barry and Cate, welcome to the forum. You will get a diversity of opinions here particularly in relation to selling up the home. One thought on this is if you are selling an appreciating asset to buy a depreciating one and the possible need to buy back into the home market later in life. You may have this well under consideration already and your financial situation is a very personal matter anyway.
Re the vegetarian bit, one of the advantages of vanning/motorhoming is you are in control of your dietary preferences unlike when holidaying in resort hotels etc. Just don't preach too much to us carnivores!!
You will find grey nomads (and not just members of this forum) are a very diverse lot so you should get a range of ideas.
Jim
PS I see Rosey has already put up a post on the diet bit while I was writing mine

G'day you pair good to see you here, just one word of advice Barry, you getter get rid of that sexy looking floosy before your missus see's her, she'll go ape and smack you one!
ask away anything you wish, we may not know everything but we normally come up with something that may or may not be correct in every sense of the word but by hell we make it sound convincing! and whats more we'll argue black and blue about it as well
and if you reckon we are a bit strange in here, you're right, well not all of us, just most, we enjoy a laugh or just a smile, we encourage bulldust and insights, we support each other and try to help as much as we can! if you can put up with the occasional dummy spit from me then all will be well!
There is a lot to learn and I think everyone here is still enjoying the fact that we are all still doing just that.
My other half and I are thinking of downsizing in our home, keeping a base to come back to and still keeping a foot in the market so to speak.
We have a Jayco Hawke camper trailer and this is our first step into finding the perfect on road home for us. The Hawke is brilliant for what we are doing now, but not great for free camping on the hop I don't think.
We will find our ideal van eventually as you will yours. The guys here are a brilliant team and will, without a doubt, give you as much info as they can.
Food is food guys, we all have our likes and dislikes.

Hi Barry & Cate. Welcome to the Nomads If you see ElBe on here thats my wife we had to hav his & her sites & we travel with a small dog to. IM almost vegetarian when traveling mainly sallads & Chook (i dont quite classify Chook as real meat) see we are strange here. Enjoy Daryl & Leslie
Gidday Barry and Kate. As mentioned you need only to ask and all your questions on all things camping, travelling, fixing broken bits and which parks will let your furballs in etc will be answered. Sometimes, only sometimes mind you, the subject you started on the forum will get sidetracked, bushwacked and generally off tracked by clever but clearly disturbed members. The end result is some of the best laughs you can find by the printed word. You will have fun!!! ... and perhaps even have your serious question answered eventually.
So you are vegos? Well nobody's perfect. I hope that your furballs are not also vegos??? Me, I just love a good slice of dead cow with gravy and spuds.
G'Day Barry & Kate and welcome from me too ~ relatively new to posting but not to lurking. Love the names of your pugs - "tiddly winks & Yum Yum" lol ~ I am curious as to who named them? would be interesting to hear you calling them to dinner Barry, specially in a van park I am also not on the road yet but if all goes well won't be long.

That reminds me of the bloke who had a dog named "Arf".
Each night at dinner time the bloke would stand on the back doorstep and call out "Arf, Arf" he couldn't figure out why all the neighbours were laughing.

Hey Guys, thanks for all the kind replies and welcoming words.Hey Davo the great looking girl in the photo just happens to be my girlfriend and my gorgeous bride,so how lucky am I.
At the moment we are considering that we will need to by a motorhome , as this affords us the ability to have space, but still be motoring towards another sunset. We have been looking at some rigs available on the net and in the mags and we feel that something around 27-30 foot with the tag along car is what we will aim at.My only concerns are that putting one of these into a c/park would be a bit tricky at times.I personally like the idea of being able to just pull up anywhere along the road for a night ,to start driving again in the morning ,but we worry about the safety aspect. Is there anything to be really concerned about.
Cheers Barry

Hi all, this is Cate now - I think perhaps we should set up separate identities on here so there's no confusion.
I see Barry didn't answer all your replies, too busy thinking about his big rig - how typically male!
Dave06 - thanks for the compliment - but please believe me when I say I don't consider myself sexy anymore - I'm as grey as the old fella standing next to me in that pic - only difference is, I give into the bottle of hair dye !!!
I'm pleased to hear others travel with their little dogs and I've been reading some posts under the related topic and have picked up some excellent tips already. 'Sunshine', we can't actually remember who came up with the names of our Pugs. I do recall when Tiddly Winks was a baby she did an awful lot of tiddles indoors whilst we were house training her so we quickly changed her original name of Twinkles to Tiddly Winks - this became even more appropriate when it was discovered she is actually blind in one eye and she does wink a lot. We named our other baby Yum-Yum which we took from one of the Three Little Maids from School (The Mikado).
I think the idea of downsizing our home to perhaps a unit is probably the best way to go, that way we could have the best of both worlds. My concerns are mainly in relation to our health so it would be great to maintain a home base, if God forbid, something should happen.
As for being vego's - no fear - we do not preach or judge, we just do what's right for us and respect others for their choices.

Hi Cate and Barry.... Welcome from us as well. We {Roger} and I are nearlyyyyyy retired. We went through the same as you guys , as do most people soon to retire I think. Decisions...decisions...decisions. Our decision was made easy by me I reckon. I just refused to contemplate my future without the bricks and mortar to come back to. We too have a "diet" issue. I am not a vegetarian as such as I do eat fish, however, Roger loves his red meat and vegies. Never once has my food "issues" caused a problem when camping!!! Often asked to share someones camp for dinner and all have accepted my "dietry" requirements. You will find very few judgemental people on the road.. Thats really the beauty of it all. Most GN have the love of freedom in common. Don't hurry in your decision making. Took us 2 years to decide what sort of van would suit our "wants". Reckon we got it right for this stage of our lives. Cheers
And a warm welcome from me too. I'm just a nomad who lives in a van full time, and every now and then I back the Land cruiser up and hitch up and head to anothr destination. Most of us don't judge other nomads for their ways or if they're different. We're just glad you are here to share, ask, and enjoy. While we attempt to help each other, the laughs just keep coming, courtesy of the foil-clad brigade - no names, no pack drill. I hope you enjoy your time on The Grey Nomads.

Don't worry about being Vegetarian....we have all sorts of religions on here, including a couple that are dabbling in Scientology. These people are obvious because they don't wear alfoil beanies.
I hope you enjoy our forums. Have fun setting up your rig and ask many questions!!
