Has anyone a favourite spot to share along the Murray river? Hubby and I intend to set off from Albury and head along it for a few weeks, mainly camping off-road. We have a Toyota coaster (and a small dog).
I know there are ideas in the camping books but thought some of you may like to throw in some suggestions, thanks Sue
Hi Sue, will keep my eye on this post we are in millicent and heading out in 3 weeks[after easter & school hols] want to do the same as you after doing great ocean rd then up to ballarat theres heaps of info in the camp books but to me word of mouth is far better thanks ailsa.
We done the Murray last year & used the camps 5. These sites were good. 179 Ramco pt. 153, Martins bend. 214,Big bend lookout[didnt camp this one but fantastic veiws]. 298, Forges Beach. 302, Bourks bend. 331,Kerang Apex Park. 303, Horseshoe beach. These are worth a look.

Just joined on, although been watching for a million years. My comment isn't about the Murray unfortunately, nearly got there, end of last year, but as the bride & I are hospitality contractors , we never know where we are going to go or end up half the time.
Currently in Goondoowindi, just finishing off a relief management gig in a motel, before heading to a property west of Cairns for the 2010 tourist season.
Anyway my interest with your post Colsa is your pikkie of car and van. I am not to sure if that is your current rig, however we pull a 1998 Windsor (re named RetroLiner) with a pristine 1976 VK Chrysler Valiant.
Would love to chat to someone like your self who is out there in a classic.

Sorry can't help you out with info on the Murray but just wanted to tell you that we are also traveling in a Toyota Coaster with a small dog.

This is good info; ok to read the "Camps" book but better to have real info on sites. We live in south east SA so any other info re campsites on river would be appreciated. We have Nissan and 21ft Jayco. Cheers
Here is a great spot. It is on the Northern side of the Murray in NSW. Just west from Tocumwal around 4klm.
Entrance to spot 35 48 13.83S 145 32 12.28E
Camp Site 34 48 07.72S 145 32 17.56E
It is alongside a beach and if you face the water you face west. Great spot outside summer however we have enjoyed it even in summer. You are camped on the shallow side so swimming is easy. Phone and Tv both available.

Not sure when you are planning to go Sue, but you need to be aware that a long stretch of the Murray downstream from Yarrawonga is currently subject to a blue-green algae bloom, and they are advising people not to go in the water. There aren't any warning signs along the river bank, you need to keep an ear on the local news bulletins.
Good to hear a bit of info about spots along the Murry as we will be down that way in a month or so & want to do some camping with the van there before(or after) heading for the Great Ocean Road then going...wherever. Jon & Hylda

Hi justcrusin, thanks for that info got the camps book out and marked these we plan to do the ocean rd. then ballarat, bendigo, then echuca, then east to where ever. Ta colsa.

At the risk of stealing the thread .. Bloody Valiants .. I had a beautiful green 74?V that SWMBO put into the back of a cement truck. So I got a 76? baby ****e yellow one that got along the road like a sherman tank.... but we loved it .. until the carby kept playing up. Buggared if I could fix it. The last notable trip was up the beach from Noosa North Shore to Cooloola coloured sands. Pulled good but drank fuel like a thirsty camel.
Forgot to add we want to fit in Lake Eyre somehow while it has water, I think after the Great Ocean Road & the Murray. Not sure where we can camp there or where the scenic spots are as we can't afford any plane flights to see it from above, no roads seem to go close on Google Maps Jon & Hylda

Hilda/John If you travel the Oodnadata Track to William Creek (which is doable if carefull) you then can leave your van there and take the short trip to the Lake Eyre viewing area. If the road to the viewing area is ok then you can take your van there and camp overnight as we have done. Have a look on Google Earth....

Hi vkgreenie, will try to explain how to do the pics, i had to go in and do it so it would be right, go into user details, then over to profiles scroll down to avatar and click, then click on select file,go into your pictures and click on the one you want then click open and with a bit of luck it should all happen, no doubt there will be someone on the site that will know how to do it 2 steps, cheers colsa. Hi all. There are a series of booklets available which show all murray river access points betweenAlbury and Mildura.good maps showing camping areas etc.Excellent stuff if you wish to wend your way slowly along the Murray or just pick a spot for a famly camp out.Published by Spatial vision I think they aslo now do the fire brigade mapsCheers, Mary
Thank you to all who responded to this thread, another reason I wanted to know your fav. spot was because I dont have the latest camps book, just an old one, so those who gave me page references unfortunately that wont help but will take note of the names.
Hi Sandyym54, our coaster looks like an older version of yours but has been modernised inside. Has 2 single beds at the back (our choice as hubby is not good at sharing the doona lol) and the usual amenities. Our Maltese/Shizu cross loves the bus thank goodness and we managed quite well when we went up as far as Bundaberg last winter. Hope to go further inland this winter but we have a grand/bub expected at the end of July so need to hang around till then. We live in a small village (Jindera) just out of Albury. In the meantime we plan to do just shorter trips like this one along the Murray.
Nicholstones, re- the blue-green algae, we are aware of it and hopefully the rain we have been getting recently will help to disperse it, but we wont be swimming or drinking it unless we are 100% sure its ok, but thanks for the reminder.

My vote on the favourite Murray River stop would be at Mannam (can't remember how it is spelt sorry). It is free, and just a ferry ride across from the beautiful quant town! Cheers, Dianne
Tocumwal can be extremely busy in school hols and long weekends. The algae situation has improved down here. Just for a detour, there are off shoots of the Murray such as the Edward River through Deniliquin. There are camp spots along the river but have never stayed in them my self. Some of the caravan parks have river frontage too.
