We are looking to travel from the Gold Coast to Adelaide in early September for our daughters wedding. The better half wants to fly but I have convinced her that the outback country may be quite spectacular after all the rain in QLD. I am thinking of heading out to Birdsville and down the track to Marree, then through the Flinders to Adelaide. I though spring time would be a good period to take this run. We are experienced travellers in OZ but not this part of the country. I would of course check road conditions etc before deciding the final route.
I need advice on accommodation along the way. We normally travel with a camper trailer but I plan to leave it at home this time. I thought overnight in country pubs, park cabins etc would be a different experience for us as this is a drive through rather than a camping trip. I just hope the ferry will be up and running.
Can anyone recommend some really interesting places on route for accommodation. Quality accommodation, though desirable, is not that important but good tucker and a cold beer (or three) while jawing with a few locals is a priority. I would not want to pass through Birdsville at race time as rooms would be booked out.
Accomodation is available at Birdsville, Mungarannie, Marree, Lyndhurst, Leigh Creek, Arkaroola, and many places, including stations further south in the Flinders. Any google search will find them. The northern ones might be risky without bookings though.
Thanks All, I think I have enough information from Google now. I just thought it wise to ask some people who have maybe traveled that route in recent times.
I should have mentioned that I am on Madura Island, East Java at the moment and won't be back in Oz before mid June. I have no access to any Oz travel literature other than a very slow internet connection. Regardless, I think I have the trip pretty well planned.
good luck with your trip would love to know how you go we are putting in the plans also i would like to go for my birthday in june but am told june is freezing out there, we do have fantastic camping gear good sleeping bags ect so might still think about it .
