We are about to purchase a 5th wheeler and take off. Our little boy Winston (a Maltese male dog) will be with us. At home he's used to using a doggie-door at night when he wants to go outside, so we're wondering if any of you have a similar situation with your small dog and have any ideas as to how to set up a nightly escape route for him without us having to get out of bed?
Hi Ynot, Our little male dog is a Lasso/shizu, at home uses a doggy door, when traveling in the van I take him out before bed & hes fine till morning. Its more likely me getting up at 3Am, if I do I take him out but generaly hes ok. Cheers Daryl
Aren't you afraid he will get distracted with all the night smells and wander off. Time you woke and found him gone he could be miles away.
I do as Daryl does, I let Max out last thing before bed and as soon as I wake I take him out again. He has never had any accidents in the van, he was just a puppy of 8 months when I first bought the van.

Why not train to a tray which can be cleaned and disinfected with newspaper, sand or kitty litter in it? Then one of the cheapie shops had a tray with artificial grass in it on sale for about $30. Need to do the disinfecting and regular washing tho...... There are also puppy training pads to be bought in most supermarkets. But the outside trip last thing at night and again 1st thing in morning is cleanest way to go.
I have a cast of thousands (4) that come with me. I take them out last thing at night and they are OK till morning. Just don't feed him late, if he is fed around 5 or 6pm then taken out about 9 or 10pm everything should be fine.

my dog always wakes me up aroud 4 amish to go out which is good, when on the road we have him hooked up to a lead thats conected to the van and then he can only go as far as that lead.. he has a harnes on all the time when travelling ,which is supposed to be required by law in nsw for dogs in cars etc..
Yes, Ynot, I'd be worried about my dog wandering off at night too if he could get out of the van by himself. Everyone above has given great advice, and I'd go along with that for sure.
