Saw a Queensland ute in Perth 'tother day with the (new?) number plate slogan "The smart State". I recalled Joh, Russ Hinze, Peter Beattie and Anna Bligh, among others, and thought: Gee, I love irony. Cheers, Tony

And it's till funny. Could someone tell Anna to stop selling the state off. She's not very smart. Why doesn't she just lease everything out to the private sector without selling it off. Then would the designer of the WA roads get over here urgently. The Qld roads outside of the city and inner regional zone kill people. All this state's money is definitely spent in the region between the NSW border and the Sunshine Coast, and inland a little bit.

Re. Privatisation .... That other Woman Thatcher started it all & in Aussie the Productivity Commission has been a powerful champion of privatisation.
I think that a balance of Gov & non Govt. enterprises might be the go. Where it can be shown that PE can do the job better, then the business should be considered for sale & unless there is a compelling public interest involved.
In other cases where large capital injections are required to ensure future performance of the enterprise then maybe the Govt might need to consider where their investments should go .. to an enterprise, or to their core responsibilities like health and education (yer yer ..... ) and some roads. Maybe even in the bush. Indeed it may well be the case that by selling some Govt Enterprises to obtain capital for meeting emerging social needs, rather than borrowing might be good economic sense.
Re roads, I believe that the current Qld. Gov. has committed to the greater proportion of spending to other than SEQ in the coming budget.
The comparison of WA & Qld road systems & then 'blaming' a State Govt might be a tad unfair. Remember that the Federal govt past & present has a major interest in the main highways.
Oh yer, there are a number of Public/Private enterprises where a form of 'leasing' is involved.
I think that I'll go & have a little lie down now
(Hope its stopped raining in Cairns & your mould has gone away)
When the farm's going broke there is often no option but to sell off the back paddock(s). This is the very situation that (then) Mrs Thatcher was faced with in Britain when she inherited a basket case economy resulting from socialist ideology gone mad. Kennett in Victoria was faced with a similar situation when he inherited a rust belt economy resulting from the incompetence of the Cain/Kirner years. Methinks history is repeating itself in NSW and Qld.

The dearest state in the Union ???????????????
Quite so, but I think you mean dearest state in the Commonwealth. the "Union" conventionally refers to the United States of America.... maybe a bit pedantic but lets not confuse our histories.

The way our Tv stations do it I am under the impression that we are the 53rd State. Everything is American orientated. GR GR GRRRRRRRowl.

Incoming!!! The "Mexicans" are landing. Well, they trickling in already. This normally placid park has been quite busy this week. I'm losing my off season privacy. Perhaps the wet season has gone, although they're complaining about it being "a bit muggy". I've turned the a/c off last night, and the fan is doing a good job. The mould keep rearing its ugly head in a few spots. Oil of cloves is kept busy. It's been a rotten wet from the mould and mildew perspective, and I found leaks in the van walls which were never there before the l o n g rainy period. My awning roof has also suffered from the elements, and I'll have to replace it. I hope the insurance Co understands.
As for NSW roads, there's a bit of bitumen between the potholes. We use these roads wherever we go, we pay for these roads wherever we go, and we, with the truckies would be the best informed critics of these roads wherever we go. Yet they ignore us. Keep up the good work fellow nomads.

This is a quote from Andrew Bolte...... Victoria has run out of true leaders? were really now led by buck-passers, media tarts and paper-shufflers? ....How true....Now they want to tax us to drive into the main cities....Melbourne has nearly 3 Million compared to New York London Paris and others....What a cheek......Though I keep out of that part of Victoria
