At a park in Darwin a few years back, an old fella bought his night bucket to the toilets first thing, emptied in the loo but came out and rinsed it in the clothes washing troughs next to the washing machines.

It was only a dozen steps to go back in and tip it down a toilet. There are some dirty ones out there and plain lazy as well. ashamed

In Alice Springs in 2004 an old fellow came in with his night bucket and emptied it in the hand wash basins, ever since then I only let the tap run when I need a shave, no way am I putting a plug in and rinsing my face that way never know what went in before.

Hmm, we have come across the problem of some people apparently not being able to read notices at caravan parks!!! We have just come back from a short sojourn to Elliott heads, and hubby mentioned that one guy emptied his cassette down the loo, when notices ALL OVER THE PLACE asked you not to!!!

Is it us being pernickety or are some people just straight out thick and blind??

Dead right JRH. They think the signs and rules are for everybody else and if it doesn't suit them, ignore it.

Recently in Mt. Gambier, we enquired at the office about a dump point. The manager told us that the dump point was blocked so to just use the trap near the van when nobody was looking. We weren't very impressed!!!!!

There,s one born every day & some #*@#* survive.
Prossibily the same ones that leave their s##t all over the roadside rest areas & parks,causing the closing of some areas.

Spent about 40 nights free/budget camping over the last 2 months and found that most were pretty good. But the closer we got to a major town the worse they got. Anyone else found this?

We stayed at the Boab tree near Broome, on the Great Northern Highway at the t intersection to Broome and Derby.

Such a lovely spot to camp, so we had a walk int he bush to find firewood. But the disgraceful abuse as a toilet area was sad to see. No one knows how to dig a hole it seems.

Seen the same as you firefly disgusting when you can't go for a walk in the bush because of some people that are making it bad for the rest of us no wonder some of the free camping spots get closed. Helena.

The people in the Broome area only carry cartons of cans, not shovels in their cars. The dry communities has caused problems and only moved the problem to places such as the boab tree and other roadside parks in the region. They drink up big on the way home. These people are on the highway every day, usually in the afternoon or early evening from south and north. They often stop at Sandfire Roadhouse for a top up on the way home from Pt. Hedland.
I don't know if Sandfire is fully operational again after the fire 4 years ago. There was no bar yet in 2007, and it looked like Ken wasn't in a hurry to rebuild.
It's a real worry about those people JRH mentioned. They don't think about the next bugger who has to use the facilities.
Some of the sullage these days is connected to the sewerage, but ..............
The dump point could also be connected to the sewerage, but it won't affect anyone who is going to camp, as no one parks next to the dump point.
I wonder if they live like that? My guess is, probably not. In fact they are probably fanatically clean at their house and throw the rubbish on the footpath next door.
Unfortunately that's life, and we have to try to live by example, keep opening our mouths to let these people they've done something socially unacceptable, and to hell with the consequences.
Someone has to be responsible.

Crossing the Nullabor last year many places (especially the truck stops that did not have toilets) were an absolute disgrace - some people could not even be bothered walking off the dirt drive sections - I always bury the solid then burn the paper - stops it from being dug up by animals and/or blown around.

Those people who make a mess in van parks and rest areas are very often just the same at home with one big difference, there they have their wives to clean up after them.

Australia is not alone with this problem. 23 years ago we were travelling around Europe in a Kombi van and the human waste left at the overnight road stops in France was what convinced us to go back into Gremany.Our son was 18 months old back then and there was no way we were going to let him wander around in that filth. As for the other countries we visited (Germany,Holland,Switzerland and Belgium) we were pleasantly surprised.

It's not just the blokes either. I've seen some young mothers that just throw dirty nappies into the bush.

Yep one can find disposable nappies in just about every rest area.
