Printer for laptop

Hi travellers.  I have recently taken ownership of a new laptop (Dell Studio 17) using Window 7, and I have an older Dell Photo 926, which I have just had confirmed will not operate on Windos 7.  So, it is time for me to purchase a new one.  I think Dell consumables will be hard to buy "on the road" so looking at other brands.  Obviously size and weight are a consideration as well as ease of buying refills.

Looked at Epsom TX110 today, almost one kg lighter than the Dell, but not a lot of difference in dimension.  Anyone with other suggestions.

Looking to be able to print standard documents, colour photo quality, scan and copy.  Faxing is not an option.

Check whether the printer uses separate printer cartridges for each colour or "combo" cartridges as these can cost almost as much as a cheap printer to replace. In the case of the combo, if one colour runs out you have to replace the whole combo cartridge.

Thanks Jimricho, yes, this was covered off by the remarkably helpful young lady at Good Guys Browns Plains. The Epsom printer I am looking at has individual cartridges.

I always buy Canon.  Start off as low as $64 .00.

I always try to warn others about buying printers that only take one or two ink ( 1 BLK 1 Col)  cartridges they sound like a cheaper deal but when either cartridge runs out the unit shuts down regardless of how much remains in the other .

Mine takes 5  individual cartridges and each can run independently of the others and it also takes the cheaper after market cartridges . I know Dell will only take Dell and as you say they aren't always available on the road and only some can be refilled after market.

Was in Big W the other day and just as a time wasting exercise priced my 5 against the 2 cartridge units and it was around the same, mine may have been a few cents cheaper

I have found rather than cart the printer around I save to a dongle and then go to a local library and pay to use their printer or if it's pics down to a 1 hour photo lab in town, every town has one

Thanks Wombat, all good points. especially to use local library etc. Hopefully only printing will do will be home made xmas/birthday cards, xmas calenders etc.

Printer will also be used for scanning properties, i.e. keeping copies if receipts etc, instead of carting around excess "paperwork"

Hi Wombat,
Mine is a Canon Pixma 210.  Great printer, but, as you say, when one cartridge is empty, it won't work.  What model do you have, and how much does it cost for refills ?
Also, how much is the Printer ?
Thanks,
Cheers,
Sheba.

Maybe you could try locating drivers for your current printer, it will be more then likely to be a driver issue as to why it won't work with W7 rather then the printer itself, the printer can simply only do what its told to do.

As for a new one, make sure you check out if it has seperate ink tanks, as another Nomader suggested, and check around on the prices for these, sometimes a new set of inks can be more then the printer is worth.

If you don't need colour, then look at a cheap laser printer. Again check on ebay if you can buy toner for it, as they are reasonably easy to re-fill, and economical to run.
