Hi all. Planning a trip Perth-Melbourne and back via Adelaide and Broken Hill, along the Murray and perhaps a side-trip to Canberra ("G'day Kev"). This would be in my petrol-powered Magna with an as yet to be determined CT. Want to carry extra petrol in (new) jerrycans. After this trip, I plan to buy a diesel-powered something. If I empty the jerries, leave them to dry out thoroughly for a week or so through evaporation of any remaining petrol, can I then fill them with diesel without worries? I can't see why not, but am open to advice/corrrection. (And I would NOT go the other way: diesel to petrol). Cheers, Tony

G,day Tony We have done the same trip in a holden towing a 14ft van, there is no need to carry fuel unless u go off the black stuff, there are fuel stops aplenty. We went and brought a jerrycan for the trip across the Nulla., filled her up at Esperence and to get rid of it poured it in at Nullarbor servo (i bet ya didnt guess whos first trip ocross it was) Might be a good move if u want to buy your fuel before u cross the Nulla. to save a quid or two, i think i paid $1.75 at one place for unleaded.
Hi All, Toneyd I use the jerry can all the time , for deisel and when we are there and i want fuel for the genny I just fill them up with petrol just give it the up side down bit to see if there is any left..same when I fill them for the trip back just fill with deisel. The little bit that will be left wont do any harm.. The only real problem can be IF you get a static elect. spark from the can when it has had petrol in it , They state that you MUST put the can on the ground before you start to fill it..vapor will hang around for a long time in a can. could singe ones mow if it went of while being filled with out being earthed..Good trip across there...have a good time ..Bob N Bev

Filling an mt can with opposite fuels is no worry to any vehicle provided the can etc is mt. It does not need cleaning out as long as there is no rust or dirt in the can. For an oiler a little petrol will not harm. Many truckies actually add a little petrol in their tanks. When I mean a little I mean half a cup to a full jerrycan. 250ml to 20ltr, or less. The same goes for putting petrol into a diesel can.

Thanks for replies. Just as I thought, it's OK. The middle of the Nullarbor is no place to find out that I had made a mistake! Found some top class jerries at Kmart of all places. They are really solid plastic and have handles all over the place for ease of handling. About $35. Saw some metal ones today for $59 each. Ouch! Cheers, Tony
