I have just completed an 8 week trip through Central Australia. The water used was bore water of various quality. Should I clean/flush my caravan hot water service/plumbing system and if so what should i use? Redsox
What brand is ir Redsox? Truma - just flush with clean water, open the relief valve. We have a Truma and have flushed it maybe once in 5 years of faultless operation.
Others brands have electrodes. You should remove and check the electrode as well as flush the unit.
For the most common ones like Surburban (non stainless steel), it is important to drain the system, remove, clean & if necessary replace the sacrificial anode rod. A 5 minute job.
I do this after every trip or 3mths, which ever is the shortest.
My unit has used about 4 rods in 13 years & is still going strong. We use what ever water is available & just filter drinking water with a screw on fitting at the tap.
talking of hot water systems, we also have a Truma and have found that it began to 'trip out' our power - can anyone please shed some light on what may be the cause. It works alright on gas - thankfully - can still have my hot showers!!

Hi Pejay, I had the same problem with my water heater. It was caused by the elect. heating element being burnt out. This happened because i forgot to turn off the power when i drained the tank. It worked on gas until i replaced the elect element.

Pejay, I forgot to say that you must open the relief valve to get the pressure out of the tank otherwise you will get covered in water which may still be hot..

yes it is a good idea to flush your hot water tank at least once a year and more if you have had some doubtful water. As said if it is a suburban then check the anode rod & replace if warranted. Oh and this is the plug in the Suburban that makes it easy to flush. Make sure that the water heater is turned off and cold 1st of course.
