Head of the Bight whale watching

Hi fellow nomads!
We're now in Ceduna & will be driving west across the Nullarbor after the election but want to do some whale watching for a few days at the Head of the Bight whale watching ctr. So I'm wondering if any of you experienced Nullarbor travellers have any suggestions as to the closest places we can unhitch our caravan for a few days so our drive there won't be too long, a search on the internet only found the Nullarbor Roadhouse which has a few caravan sites.

Cheers
Jon

Jon, the head of the bight is quite close to the main road, take the van in with you .
When we were there two yrs ago the NPs building was closed . you could have camped there.

Hi Jon
assume you want a c/park? there is one at Eucla just over the W.A border.
Maybe 30k past the Head of Bight?

see link   http://www.nullarbornet.com.au/ and look up Eucla.
Only stopped there for coffee and petrol but the c/park must be o.k cause the boss wanted to stay there.

If you are heading west anyway, the Whale Watching, at the head of the bight is on Aborigonal Land, so you have to pay an entry fee, there is no camping at the Centre, but there are other spots along the Bight, west of the whale watch facility, that we have camped.
As has been stated here, the Nullabor Roadhouse is about 20Km west of the entry to the head of the bight, so while you can't camp at the head of the bight, you could still stay there, there has also been an opportunity, to take a flight from Nullabor Homestead at times, don't know whether its available at present, give them a ring.

Cheers,
Colin

PS Look at Camps 5.

Thousand apologies Jon.

were only there 4 months ago and went from memory, instead of checking the diary.
Had such a great time, the miles seemed to fly past. lol.

Cheers

Go to the ceduna tourist info and ask for the nullabor map. The y might even answer your questions too. There are caravan parks behind all the roadhouses across the nullabor as far as i know.

Dont forget to pick up the brochure that gives you a bit of a fuel discount, I have ended up with a couple but cant remmember where I got them. I think a must do is see a sun rise, from memory some good spots about 20-30 odd km east of border village, nice pull off spots and every time I have done the crossing there is always some one with a van parked up there, gets bloody windy though. Would also think that there would possible be free whale watching there if prepared to sit watch and wait. From memory it was fairly expensive to do the watching at the head of the byte, good place to spend a few hours if the weather is nice.
cheers

Thanks for that we have already found out Head of the Bite is $12 per person but that's ok, we don't mind paying, the only thing is that it's dissapointing this covers only one day there but we will try to see them at some other spots along the coast in the area as long as we can get the caravan there.

With luck someone will write in about where to pick up those petrol discounts brochures.

Cheers
Jon

Jon,

The Nullabour roadhouse is the place to base yourself. Cost is average per night at any stop across the Nullabour. Hot showers do cost around a dollar. Don't leave anything outside of your van---------, there are dingos around!! When checking in, however you are warned of this!
There is a great information centre at the whale watching site; a cost is involved, however it is a first class viewing area.
Enjoy it.
It is great!!

The Nullarbor net web site (link provided above) is an excellent site. Study it before departing.

Nullarbor Roadhouse - I don't think it is much good trying to book in for the caravan park. Aim to get there rather early in the afternoon (particularly if you don't have an ensuite.) Very few stay more than one night so just aim to arrive before the rush. The amenities block is beside the entrance gate. If you are coming from WA you have a two hour advantage on those coming from the east (time zones.)

On our visit for the whales we arrived early so we could spend the afternoon at the head. That gave us plenty of time for the afternoon. We found out that a ticket covered 24 hours so we returned with the van next morning. The road in was good bitumen and only 11 km long so taking the van was OK. We stayed there until morning tea and then set off for Ceduna.

Which ever way you go from the Head of the Bight, remember you will pass through a fruit and vegetable quarantine station.

If crossing the Nullabor make sure you keep a little gold in your bathroom bag as some places like Eucla have coin operated showers.
