Jockey wheels as van jacks

Don't know where i found this idea but.

a couple of pensioners had a jockey wheel jack fitted to either side of their caravan near the rear end so as to save them bending down to ground level to reach the van's jacks.

was thinking of doing the same thing by mounting the jacks on a piece of 3/4 inch ply and then through bolting to another bit of ply on the inside the van.

Then bolt a couple of L brackets on  the ply to fit under the van.

You cut the handles off the jacks and either weld a nut on or grind the metal down to form a nut and then use a rachet spanner to lift and lower.

Any ideas or hints ????

cheers
Coyotte

Hi ...

Asuming that by the term 'jacks' you are refering to caravan 'corner steadies'. They are designed to hold the van steady & not rock as you walk thru it.  They certainly are not designed to level the van.

Having said that, if you want an easy way to deploy the wind down type corner steadies, all you need to do is cut the end off your hand crank & fit it into a battery drill to do the job.  I think you can buy similar attchments from Camec & Coast to Coast RV shops.  Or like me, make one from an old socket & a bit of reo rod.

For my part I would think twice before doing the mod you suggest.

Of course you could always spend a motza & install hydraulic corner jacks that are deployed by a central hydraulic jack pump.

Hope this helps.

Some of the off road caravans have jockey wheel clamps on their rear bumper bars. They are supplied with jockey stands (flat plate under instead of wheels) for the van steadies. I think the main reason for this is that the normal type steadies get wiped of when crossing creeks.
