Blogs ect

People have asked me if we are going to have a blog.  Are we going to join up to face book?  Will we tweet?

The answer to the last two is no, won' t facebook or twitter, but wondering about the pros and cons of a blog.

Asked my extremely computer literate (IT Asst mgr within Qld gov) son, which he would read - bulk email, blog, facebook, forum......he said he would prefer to read email, even though it was sent "bulk"

So, I am wondering about the point of a blog.  Have checked out some from this forum, plus some others that have appeared after googling, and have found what I found to be interesting, however, would not necessarily go back to follow.

So, I am thinking that to set up a blog when you are out there is the BIG AUST OUTBACK, could be just a lonely as sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring.

So, what advise from other bloggers please...

face book is ok, but its not for every one,
I have friends on there that I dont get to see very often so its a good way to keep up etc.
but my blog is my way of sharing my life,
I have my music up there, some of my radio shows, some videos and pics
and im always changing it, working on it..
it depends on what you want in a blog, ie for posting videos/pics of your trips?
feel free to check out mine if you wish.. im always changing, upgrading it etc..

Dunmowin, it depends what you are trying to achieve. A bulk email will reach people who might not necessarily be bothered checking your blog, but it is ephemeral. If you meet someone new on the road you aren't going to resend all the past emails to them, but you might let them know your blog address and they might go off and look at it.

With a bulk email you control who sees it - to cover all bases you will probably send it to people who aren't interested and don't really want to receive it, but are too polite to tell you so, and you may well miss people who would in fact be interested. With a blog they decide whether they want to look at it or not. Your audience may well be larger than you think - we have often been surprised to find that people have followed our travels that we didn't realise they were.

Lastly, the blog acts not only to let others know what you are doing, but also as a travel diary for yourselves. Call us self-centred, but every now and then on a rainy day we go back over our blog to relive the happy travels we have had around this wonderful coutntry, that just wouldn't be practical with bulk emails which would just get lost.

We have found blogging is best way to keep family and friends informed of what we are doing and where we are.

"ephemeral" - we had to look that up in our new electronic dictionary!

Thanks Nicholstones, the more I research, the more I think i will blog.  The trouble is in coming from an extremely "hi tech info" company, who block access to so many things, that it kind of makes you a bit nervous about doing something from your home computer that you are not able to do at work.
