Help! Those travelling with Tinnies

Hi all,

Been getting some confusing info of late - not that unusal for me, but....

We have a 10 ft tinnie with a 4hp motor that will sit on top of the car when travelling, and Peter has been told by Main Roads here in Qld that we do not have to register it, however, on talking to various people, they appear to be surprised that we don't have to, but what happens when we travel interstate with it? Is there a possibility of us being fined if we don't have it registered?

Thanks,

Peter & June

Bluey has a 10ft tinny and a 5hp motor.  In NSW you only have to register them if your motor is  above 5hp

Shhhhhh. Don,t tell anybody , but I have a 6hp with 4hp stickers on it! Watch out in WA. I ws told by a Calm(cons.and land managment)ranger that I had to reg my 12ft dingy to use it in Shark bay, so I moved 50k down the coast where there were no rangers.........In Qld if it does more than 10knots, planing speed, you have to reg it.Bill

At one stage it was judged on HP then it was changed to knots and I think it was changed again to some other misguided calculation.

Lets face it a 5 hp on a 13 footer will not get the same performance as a 5hp on 10 footer.

I would go onto the net under Vessel registration and read up on the fine print in the state you are operating in .

Not unlike fishing licences for those who live in NSW but fish the Tweed river on the QLD side.

In some States pensioners are exempt fees while in others they get only a reduced fee.

One Nation be Buggered it is They look after the greedy not the needy

We will only become one nation when we get rid of the money wasting and grabbing state level of government and reduce the redtape and beaurocratics to one level instead of the three that we currently suffer under.

Lets face it, as grey nomads we are forced to twist the rules in everywhich direction to enable us to legally explore our own country in our own vehicles using our own driving skills licenced under each different state.

If we eventually get a government in place that has the intestinal fortitude and determination to remove all the state level powermongers and make everything federally controlled we may be half way there to a "One Nation"concept.

First things first though, lets get a Federal Licence and Registration system in place, heavy vehicles have it, WHY THE HELL DON'T WE !!!

This is one thiong I will be pushing with my local federal member once I get sorted down here.

Personal opinion but I have a 12 ft tinnie with a 15 hp motor. I think this is the optimum travelling boat. Yes you do need a licence (I am in qld), but your licence is good Australia wide. With an outfit like this you can access a hell of a lot more fishing spots, particularly along the coast, and it has the get up and go to get you where you want to go and back again in a hurry if needs be. I have owned 4, 5, 6, 15, 25 and 75 hp motors. For travelling give me the 15 anyday, oh and imho a folding/breakdown trailer is a must.
