GROUP EFFORT FOR NATIONAL REGO/LICENSE

I have broad shoulders and a big mouth so I will start the ball rolling on this one as it is a pet of mine...

It's time we got a concerted and group effort started to force the government into giving us a Federal Registration and License for all of us Nomads......

Many of us just use the address of our relatives for convenience, why should we ?
why should we be forced to impose upon them ? what about those of us like myself who have only one relative or those that have none, how are we supposed to manage ?

Surely if enough of us get together and make a stand on this issue we should be able to get some sort of concession.

Are there any members out there who are legal qualified or paralegal, and I do mean genuine not just barrack room lawyers, we need acyrate and genuine legal advice regarding the issue.

I am presently doing a letter up that I will post here for all members to print off and send to your local state and federal members, give them an ear bashing, make the ba$tard$ earn their money.

Lets get this situation sorted now for the generations to come.

The more people who support this push the more chance we have of getting something done.

You sure are Grumpy , Mate sounds like a great idea there are a lot of people out there with this problem now Federal Registration would this cover Centrelink , bank account and medicare , maybe we could have just an email address , for this to work would have to have big groups like CMCA behind you if you can, you will have to be nice to the polys and I know you can worth while project

I agree, we are one country not seven.
It would make living near a state border easier too.

MAAATE!!  I've said the same thing so many times! Also about the education system as my poor kids went to school in 3 states, all different! Why does a country of 21 million need 7 different systems nowadays?

As I understand it, interstate trucks have a federal registration and/or license... are there any truck owners on the forum? How was it achieved?

PS... Ooops, theres 8 different systems, forgot to count the ACT (where we live)disbelief

I whole heartedly agree mate. I currently have a Vic driver's licence, (supposed to be a national licence which it doesn't appear to be) SA rego on my campervan & Qld rego for a ute in Qld. I don't have any problem registering either vehicles using my Vic licence.
I also had an SA driver's licence until it was matched & cancelled several years ago despite the fact that I owned property in SA & lived there at the time. I was flawed at that decision.
I have taken it up with the Police in each state (my daughter being one in SA) & they don't want to know about it. They only want to know whether you have a valid driver's licence & that your rego is current & that you have an address, somewhere.
The whole system is infuriating but you can't seem to get any sense from people within the system to do anything about it.
My daughter says it's all political, so I guess that's where we should start.
Maybe worth trying to get one of the pro-bono lawyers helping the illegal immigrants to look at it, or would that be wishful thinking?? or maybe the Aboriginal Legal Service?? they seem to have plenty of money, or maybe Senators Barnaby Joyce (Qld) or Nick Xenaphon (SA).
What about Tony Windsor or Rob Oakshott?? our glorious new Independents!!!
The mind boggles mate!!! might be better just to ignore the whole thing like the Police are doing. They know what the problems are but seem content to just turn a blind eye.

Well put Dougie,

I just minutes ago spoke to the local coppers here in Millicent, he said leave my license and everything as Qld, so long as I visit there within the 3 month grace period and prove it upon request they can't/won't do diddly squat.

There is a PM in box for you Doug.

I have said for many years, in fact since I arrived from NZ, I cannot understand how we celebrate federation when we don't have one.
Drivers Licence and Car Registration should be federal, one for the whole country. It doesn't make sense and all the fees are so different. The whole systems is crazy. Its not just for us Grey Nomads. It affects a lot of other people as well. In fact everybody.

Example, my son had a Vic Licence given back after his horrendous truck accident. Moved to Qld to be with his ex, bought a new car up there so had to change his licence to Qld and car also registered in Qld.
It didn't work out so he came back to Vic, changed his car rego to Vic but Vic Roads won't allow him to change his car licence back without all sorts of tests, eyes mainly.
The strange thing is he had a whole pile of driving tests and eye tests before Vic Roads gave him his licence back, went to Qld, changed it without question, came back and now they are questioning it. They arranged the tests the first time, he passed with flying colours, nothing has changed and he is driving on his Qld licence while waiting for Vic Roads to come to their senses.
B...... Idiots.

Good luck getting this one off the ground.

The Department of Defence tried hard to get this for ADF personnel and got Zip for their trouble ' I have held a licence in very state in OZ while serving and had to change rego's on every posting interstate and in some state had to resit the driving test and sit the written exam.

I really do will you well with this very vexing topic

Are you talking about registration for vehicles and licences or are you talking about a national address for everything?
Australia Post provides a service for nomads where you have all your mail addressed to their service and they send it out to you wherever you are.
There are fees, of course, but it seems to be a great system for those of us who don't have family to depend on.
I send prepaid post bags to my daughter, and she sends my mail to me when there's enough.
I've tried to get her to simply readdress each envelope to where I am at the moment, because it's simple. When I'm on the road full time it's a bit trickier.

If you're talking about national rego for vehicles and licences to drive, bring on a national version, taking into account each state's laws, and there are many which vary from state to state. To get a national licence you just have to apply I believe. It's not too hard.

It's only the governments which refuse to give up control over us because they don't want to relinquish control over taxes and infrastructure. What would all those out of work, redundant pollies do with their time?
Remember when they regionalised local government and amalgamated councils?
Imagine if they did away with states and territories for a national government and the regional councils? There'd be anarchy in the corridors of power.

do away with the states all together,
i have had mates who build street machines, ie hotted up cars to take
to the summer nats in act, but there cars are fully built and legal
in nsw but go over the border , cops sit just the other side and they defect
things that wouldnt be defected in nsw.. fraking stupid.
and i too agree for one licsene for any one who travels etc

Hi Guy N Gals,

Well I spoke to a friend who is a lawyer in Queensland the other evening, he said he knew of one case that was brought before the High Court of Australia in a bid to force exactly what we are after, a national Registration and licensing system, it failed dismally on the grounds of financial distress for the states.

His understanding is that the commonwealtn is working slowly towards a single licensing/registraltion system anyway, his advice was, by the time any headway was made the new system would be just about in place anyways.....

CG as for the national license, I have a National Heavy Vehicles License, that don't mean squat, and as for road rules we are supposed to be already nationalise with all those being the same state to state now. Yes there are some small differences but essentially we are all under the one set of road laws. What isthe service with Aust Post you speak of, I have done a quick look and can't find any thing....unless you are talking about mail forwarding, this is unreliable as I am finding after 8 months of using this service.

Wombat, they have had a card & agreement with the state s now for a few years that allows all defence and their employees to retain their rego and license until expiration, only then do they need to change, they have a card to carry that shows them as defence or defence families, but yes they are still fighting for that federal license and rego system as well.

The ideal situation would be the ability to have a postal address as your main address, eg...landbase australia locked bag etc etc etc.... this would solve all the issues, same same for centrelink and medicare, dva, etc....

I guess all resistance is futile, as they say you will comply mr smart......

I don't get the financial stress for the states bit GrumpyOne as we would still be paying our renewals to the one we live in or the one we assume to live in when travelling. There is no difference.

We can't have uniformity that would be far to hard to administer and what would we do with all those ministers for transport and the empires they have spent years building . The mere thought of uniformity between the states is an offense equal to Treason so you best take this discussion behind closed doors for fear of the thought police raiding the forum site office.
