G'day everyone, I have a post regarding members who have toured Tasmania and any recommendations/suggestions/tips for 2 GN's touring the state for 4 weeks. We would like to use National parks for camping as we prefer them and enjoy bush walking etc. Not all our stays will be parks so any suggestions for CP welcome. Our vehicle is 4wd so accessing area's shouldnt be a problem. cheers, Ozi

spent 6 weeks in tassie in january february this year. hired a mobile home so was fulled self contained. free staying in tassie appears to be the norm.
we had no trouble finding places to stop overnight . even found sites pay $2 or $5 for hot showers. in the smaller towns a lot of hotels you could camp out the back for a donation to the local fire fighters or ambulance
we had a great time . arrived in hobart went as far south as possible then to the huron valley craddle mountain over to the west coast down to arthur river then back along the north coast from there down the east side including maria and brunny isalnds then a drive up and down the middle.
but there is soo much to see and so many walking trails that you have to keep moving to see it all and i'm sure we missed some.
my only tip is do all the tourist thing but when in port arthur also allow time to go to the coal fields. this is an untouched and uncommericaliesd convict site. nothng great but how it was back then.

We did tassy 2002- three weeks on the island with a camper trailer. Bought National parks pass, which included camping fees, well worth the investment - you can buy it on the boat on the way over. Worthwile paying to camp in the CP near Port Arthur -

I live on the nw end of tasmania in smithton. Plenty of cheap areas to stay up this way, if self sufficent the Stanley Wharf is free, may be a bit windy this time of the year though, good fishing when a bit warmer. A must do is a place called the Wall at Derwent Bridge, its the history of the west coast carved in 2 x 1 metre slabs of huon pine. If up this way the woolnorth tour is worth doing, takes in the wind farm and cape grim and history (the cleanest measured air in the industries world). The cruise up the arther river or pieman river or the gordan river are a great way to spend a day. They leave from in order, Arther River, Corrina, Strahan. Plenty of buetiful spot to see, you will need to make a return trip of 8 weeks to even touch the surface of tassie. Live here all my life and in 50 years there are still lots of places new to me. cheers blaze

I will be taking the ferry to Devonport. My wife suffers badly from mal de mer so she is flying into Launceston where I will pick her up. We have no set schedule that day other than stay in Launceston area before tripping around. Would you have any suggestions on direction of travel from Launceston as departure will be reverse of arrival? We are totally flexible in this area. Many thanks, Ozi

Dont forget the ABT Railway from Strachan to Queenstown... a highlight of our trip 4 years ago.
We found both c'parks and free-camping all a bit crowded in February, my son was there in December and said there was hardly anybody around, apparently "the season" starts after Christmas. So when we go back it will be Nov-Dec.
Stan747 ,We are booked to go mid. Nov and the return fare for a disco and 20 foot van.. close to $1450. Its the over 2.1mts. high that brings up the fare.plus when you go. But the free camping will see that returned in no time.. comeing back mid march.. sounds like it will be fun..Plus we love fishing...
