Pam we will be there before you, leaveing for Tassie last week in Nov. Im talking to a chap that has just come back from there ,and he spent 3 months doing the rounds .Hes going to send me some info on fishing in Tassie. There are some rules that if not followed can be costly.$6000 for just fishing with bait in the wrong place. and you have to have a fishing licence for fresh water.. will let you know what he says ......

I live and fish in tassie, what do you need to know. Freshwater (start official very close to the sea in places), as stated you need to buy a licence. Also as stated be very carefull about what bait/lure is used where, for freshwater that is in the licence booklet. There is a booklet for sal****er fishing also giving legal lenths for fish, types of fish and limits and seasons. No licence required for rod/line fishing in salt but some licecences are require for things like crayfish, abalone, nets and diving ect. The info books are available at any service tasmania service centre and I think on the spirit of tasmania also. If you have more specif questions, ask away

Your post reminded me of the couple we met about 8 times all around Tassie... he always had a line in the water, and never cought anything! His wife said some kids gave him a fish one day cos they felt sorry for him! 
 
A good camping spot, but not for fishing, is Mt Field Nat Park. Also the Arthur River in the West... make sure you take the boat cruise while there.

Swell to about 4 metres you shouldnt notice much, the vessels have stablizers. If the forcast is for a rough crossing every thing is tied down, we are heading the other way on the 27th jan.

Hi Blaze,
I have talked to my son. He will be in Tassie for about a week early December and he would like to find good inland fishing spots where he can camp on the water's edge with his swag. He was sort of thinking about heading straight down the centre from Devenport to Hobart maybe.

If it was me not my son I would definitely head for the river cruises. When we did Tassie a few years ago we bumped into the same tour bus every few days,

When we went to Tassie,pre camper trailer, the crossing was wonderful. We went one way by day and the other by night,Well worth the experience, hope to go again withcamper one day.

Hi Pam
Does your son flyfish at all, normally a good hatch around that time of the year. Arthers lake at cow paddock bay comes to mind for goog camping right on the waters edge, some good fishing early in the morning and at dusk around the half summerged trees around the shoreline. Can be fished from the shore or electric motor in small boat if he has one. Fished with a fly or small wobbler (something like a wonder wobbler, lofty lure or soft plastic ) would be the way to go if he doesnt flyfish. Arthers lake is in the central highlands (home of 1000 lakrs), bradies lake also fishes well and is often stocked with biiiggg alantic salmon to 20ib.

I'm the same stan747. Would love to spend a couple of months travelling around Tassie over the summer but terrified of that crossing. I have friends and relatives over there.
Is day or night the best, a friend travels at night and gets a cabin but thats a lot dearer.

Hi Pam.  Down south of the island you can free camp at Dunalley on the Tasman Peninsular and fish from the bridge over the canal or anywhere in and around the canal.  At St Helens there is free camping at nearby Binalong Bay although it will be packed out by Christmas and good fishing along the coast there either from the beaches or the little ramps and wharves.  There are free warm showers on the waterfront in St Helens where the fish punts tie up in the toilet block.

Tassie is surrounded by water and good fishing spots for beach fishing are along the east coast right down to the Tasman Peninsular.  If you have Camps Australia Wide you won't have any trouble finding great free camps in Tassie.  Hope this helps. Send me a private message if you want more info.  Last time I was up at the Lakjes, there was free camping at all of them.  Just look at the map and try them. As you leave the lakes and come on down south through Derwent Bridge make sure you stop at the "Wall in the Wilderness" where a chap is carving in Huon Pine a wall depicting the beginning of settlement in that area along with many free standing objects. Unbelievably chever. Cheers Lorraine

Night crossing are best in my opion, get on the ferry, find your room, sit down for a meal, watch a bit of tellie, sleep, breakfast call at 6.00 am , jump in car nice and fresh and start your wonderful stay in tassie. Day trips are boring, you can only walk the decks for so long and remain sane. The crossing are mostly very smooth sailing
