We have 2 X 4.5kg gas bottles running hot water & stove plus when no electricity the fridge also.
Does anyone have any idea why, only when our caravan gas bottle gets low, we get gas fumes which can be smelt in the van & when the window above the water heater is open it smells worse (it is also probably the closest window normally to the fridge vent & bottles themselves).

It's very common when the bottles are just about to run out of gas. I don't know if it's a build up of sediment in the bottom of the bottle that is pushed up as the last bit burns, but that's the stinky stuff. Get ready to refill.

My understanding is that when the pressure is low there is not enough heat to burn all the "smelly stuff" and some gets by, plus it is heaver than the gas vapor and is last to come out??? ..Dont hold me to that ,was told that some time back ......

We have large gas bottle on the house and when it gets low it smells. The smell is to warn you that the gas is low. Never heard of it on a small (9kg or 4.5) though

Hi all, LPG is odurless, the chemical mercaptain is added to give LPG the distinctive smell for safety reasons. This becomes more pronounced as the cylinder gets low. Daryl
Thanks everyone, I guess the smell is normal then.
The van is up for rego renewal in 2 weeks time (at bloody NSW rates unluckly...$278) so apart from the mechanical inspection required which costs about $30, there is also a gas safety inspection that has to be done(about $40 from memory) so I'll make sure the gas man checks it out for leaks for me...thats if I can afford it all of cause.
Paying over $350 when on a pension just to register a caravan is definately a struggle, then there is the $455 Insurance to pay & thats not counting the cost of the tug rego & insurance.

Bluddy heck! That's a nasty shock. I rego'd my van in WA $100, and no other checks. They give pensioner discount on one vehicle, so that's on the Cruiser. I had to have it checked when I transferred the rego from NSW to WA, but none since. I keep my vehicles rego'd in WA because it's easier, and cheaper than other states. I think Vic could be cheaper, but I haven't lived there, yet. Might have to move for a while to qualify. Gee, NSW sure holds their tax payers to ransom. Get out of there! Find a better, cheaper state to live in!

How many vehicles do you have in the family? You are allowed one each on free registration. Choose the lightest weight one (if you have 3 vehicles) to be the one you pay registration on. The wife registers her car on full rates and gets the van as the freeby, saves heaps that way.

Sorry folks I goofed and mixed up the rego amount with the Insurance amount in the earlier post so I've now changed it to the correct amount. Just too many documents floating around here I think.
Nice thought anyway Peter but being on the road for a couple of years we only have the caravan & the tug (Landcruiser 100 series). From memory the caravan would be the cheaper of the two.

If those are the prices charged by the NSW Government how come the state is broke? One would assume they would be rolling in money..... Thanks for the tip about registering the van in one name and the tug in the other. We will be doing that asap. If i let management register the tug in her name, will she let me drive it? and do I actually have to take notice of the constant "driving hints" she gives me? lol

Queenslanders before you start getting carried away in this state you get pension rebate for one motor vechile and a boat , nil for caravan but I am lead to believe you can get it on a motor home or camper van but I have not inquired about that but I have talked to Queensland Transport about rebate for car and caravan and was told no for caravan but could get a rebate if I had a boat
So if they have national registration and drivers licences, how will the states cope then? All that revenue they'd sacrifice! Nah! Can't see it happening any time soon. I just wish they'd all get it together so there is some consistency between state policies and laws so we don't risk being nabbed in one state for something acceptable in another state. They do make allowances for most things, but............ I fear the day will come when their tolerance will end. Like rego stickers - none require or issued in WA. I believe SA is going the same way. What are the other states doing?

I can't see why they don't make licenses and regos universal, it is so easy. Its all the same but you still buy and pay for it in the state where you live and that state keeps the revenue to cover their costs, roads etc.
Would save a heck of a lot of confusion for everyone.
They would have the same charges, same discounts no argument.
Just too many documents floating around here I think.
