Has anyone been to Barringun, north of Bourke

There was a wonderful article in the Shepparton Weekend News about the publican of the Barringun Tattersals Pub. She is an 86 year old lady called Mary Crawley and runs the pub by herself.
There used to be 4 pubs in  the town but hers is the only one left and theres not much of anything else left there now.
Barringun is 130 ks north of Bourke in northern NSW and I have made a note in my little book to go visit when I get on the road.
She sounds wonderful.

Hi Happywanderer, we were relief Managers of the Bush Tucker Inn at Barringun some years ago (at that time owned by hubby's boss) when the resident Managers were on holidays - can be bl****dy hot in January, and a dust bowl!!! There isn't much there, just the Pub, the Roadhouse and an inspection station for DPI. It is a stones throw over the border into NSW, and at the Bush Tucker Inn, they have Dongers available for o/night accomodation, as well as a couple of powered sites. Be aware though, that a dust storm will blow one way in the morning, and back the other later in the day!!

The roads good with a lot of truckies using it to head from Qld across to SA and WA, but not so much at the height of summer as they blow their tyres with the heat generated from the hot bitumen. It's about 1/2 way between Bourke and Cunnamulla - watch for road kill though as you drive.

I checked it out on the map Pejay, in the middle of no where.
You must have met Mary Crawley then as she has been there for more than 30 years and ran the pub with her hubby before he died many years ago. Hers is the only pub left here now.
Sounds like a very desolate place and would want to be careful the time of year to go have a look.

'Morning Marj,

Yep, it is out in the middle of nowhere, but you know what? It has a beauty all of it's own, and the colours!!! The colours of the sky, the earth, they are just s-o vibrant, so very different from the wishy washy (?) colours here on the coast. Sadly because we did days from 6am to 9pm (?) we didn't get out much, other than hubby going and getting a carton from the pub (so he most probably did meet Mary), and me, once a week driving into Cunnamulla to do the banking - that was interesting, trying to drive and miss all the roadkill!!! But you know what, I loved it, and the night before we came back home, whilst sitting out the back after we had closed off for the day, I sat in awe, as the night sky was so clear, the zillions of stars, the Milky Way was just wonderful, and yep, it cemented our dream of getting out and seeing this great land - bring on 18 days!!! Oh the plans, we are making for our retirement!! There will be no stopping us!!!

June

PS Not too many plans - we just want to get to a t-intersection, and flip a coin as to which way we will head off! Hopefully we will see you on the raod sometime soon.

After that beautiful description, I would say Don't forget the camera. Sounds like worth the trip for its beauty.

Hi HW
Through Barringun last year.   Had a pit stop, not much there to see.   There is no fuel available so make sure you have enough fuel to get to Cunnamulla.   Stp and have a look around.
