In todays paper the tourism people are worried about people/tourists staying away from Echuca. It seems to be the opinion of anybody who lives away from here that we are under water and not accessible. Therefore the town has been dead since the beginning of last week and is starting to affect the businesses who need the money coming in. I have just come back from a quick trip around town both here in Echuca nd over in Moama. It is dead. There is no one around. It was the same when I went into town last week. Empty parking blocks which is really strange and the information centre beside the bridge had one car in the car park.
Echuca/Moama depend on tourist to keep growing and alive, so please visit. We are not flooded and never have been. The river rose a bit, covered the corner of one street and about 6 to 12 houses got their feet wet. That is all. We have had blue sky, no rain for weeks and temps in the low 30s.
Mornin HW, Happy Aussie Day, don't think we will get that far north on our next trip, only away for 6 weeks and such a lot to fit into that time frame, maybe in Torquay about 2nd week of March, remberber that is only a maybe at this stage. Will email you later, when we know exact dates.
I'm probably heading down there in the next 2 weeks to see new great nephew, not sure what date yet or how long I will stay. Will let you know when you let me know.
I'm only going from what I read in this mornings paper. The town is dead and no body coming because they think the town is flooded. I haven't used the c/p facilities so can't write into them and complain.
But they do need the tourist dollar to survive. This is a tourist town and needs them to visit. perhaps you could write to the Shire and tell them you don't thenk much of their facilities. That is whoever agreed with the other mentioned thread.

Feb 18th to 20th is the jazz festival. always a good one to come to. A new committee is running it this year and say this will be the biggest festival since it was first started.
Have only been to Echuca once. Had a look at the Jetty area and went to Moama Bowls club. However, being in Yarrawonga a lot, there are many nice free camping spots by the river and I think it would be a similar storey in or near Echuca.
All the years that the Echuca /Moama Council was ripping off travellers...One would think that they would have heaps and heaps of spare cash..Lets compere their Fuel prices over the years.....Unbelievable..I used to bring my own spare fuel from Bacchus marsh to go out to Christies beach Year in, and Year out..I have no Time for their Councils

Jimbo you obviously had a bad experience in Echuca at some stage, you have a bit of a bee in your bonnet about the place. Leaving aside the question of how much influence the two councils have over what fuel retailers charge, or whether any profit flows to the council from it, we were in Echuca in the middle of last year and bought diesel at little more than city prices, and less than many country towns.
It is more so the retailers who are doing it hard, if no one coming some of the shops will be getting no sales and really finding it hard to keep going. We have so many name brand shops up here and that would only be because of the tourists as the local community wouldn't buy enough to keep the flow going. Yes fuel is a bit dearer, and like you all I will fill up in Shepp or Bendigo while there. Its still a pretty place to visit. I have written to the paper putting in my two bobs worth many times about the state of all the public toilets around town. I see now the ones down the port have been getting a facelift over the last month or so.
I have just been back over my first post and as I thought I never mentioned the council/ shire etc wanting the money. I said the businesses need it to exist and the quotes came from the tourism people.
Nicholsons! No! I have never ever had a bad experience in Echuca or a bee in My bonnet... I love Echuca and have been going there for over 40 Years plus..All I'm saying is! That the almighty Dollar has grabbed them sooner than most....One would have too be an ex Councilor or Govt official to question what I am trying too say..... I have over the years sat down and drank a Beer or too with different Campers and Ex- This and E- that ....Re-People's previous employment..And have seen and Heard so many contradiction of our present day campers.and Grey Nomads......
I've never been one too except the Norm.....Been around too damn long too see what is happening....I contributed to Tracy Big Time...And Know of people's that got Nothing...So Echuca.....Call on your reserves! Beacuse you have Plenty! And Stop whinging about Tourists not Coming in

Welcome, I don't get where you are coming from. Firstly you bring in extra fuel with you from out of town and stay free at christies beach. Your statements are very contradictory, I can't make head nor tail of them at all. Cyclone tracy, ok you contributed. You love Echuca, well give something back. You are not paying for fuel and you are not paying for accommodation. Don't tell me you bring all your food too. So you are contributing nothing.
This is nothing to do with the shire coffers, Its the little shopkeeper who will struggle.
Oh! I forgot about the Pokies..Saturation from the North to the South. From the East to the West Both Towns Echuca /Moama.Are guilty of Greed and, I may add..Where does all this Money Go? Has any body ever bothered to ask.. So tourists Echuca..." Help yourselves to the Tourist Dollar from years gone By.....I intend in a couple of Years too run for Shire President..Goal the free loading Councilors and make the Yes Men and Yes women accountable for crimes against the Traveller over the years ...PS And make all Camping Free..for a total of 3 days ( Maximum along any part of our Murray River..In and around Echuca and Moama....Wipe out the rip off Echuca Caravan Park and make it free...... H.W Over 40 Years I certainly contributed to more than Fuel and Free Parking (Beach side) I was also a Volunteer at the Local Hospital for Many years..Also Helped out at the Local Information site Before you were a resident of Echuca.....I may add too that in 1994 When the Floods were big The Caravan park in Moama I and my Brother spent big time saving and helping the prefabs Move..... I have Videos of a Younger Jimbo...I commend your defense of the Rip off town called Echuca.. The Pokies, there is only one club with pokies in Echuca, the rest are in Moama which is NSW and don't the govt not the shire get the taxes from those.

Seems "Welcome" has of bit of S O L today - his comments don't go with his screen name - okay I reckon Echuca has changed over the years, but still a really good place to go, always something to do - and the cps are ok - on a par with a lot of others in touristy spots.
If you don't like a place, don't go there, simple - if you live there and don't like it - move on I reckon.

Hi tiger5. Swan Hill is still waiting for the water surge which will be in the next few days they say. They have been sandbagging all week in the hope of saving as much as they can. The water flow has slowed down a lot and has taken longer to get there than they first thought. Mainly because it has spread out over a wider area in between.
I would think by March it should all be back to normal but who can tell till it happens.
Lots to see around this area from the port with the paddlesteamers to a very worthwhile boat ride out in the Barmah lakes area. You buy the tickets for that one at the port also, and get taken through all the wetlands with the birds etc, lovely spot. Billabong Ranch is another interesting spot as well as the Wildlife Park out at Kyabram. Only being a youngster and having only been here a bit over 6 years I had better not promote the area too much as could get my hand slapped by other more knowledgeable people on here. Oh! Another intersting one is Gunbower Island which you can find a website for by googling. Once I have my campervan set up I want to try that one out. Lots of free parking.

Tiger - allow plenty of time to go down the Murray, there is heaps to see and do. If like us you are golfers then plan to play golf at every town, the Murray region has some of the best country courses in the country.
Detour slightly to Beechworth, wonderful heritage town, including famous bakery.
Rutherglen and Corowa - wonderful wine country, specialising in fortifieds but also other styles. Andersons winery in Rutherglen has, IMO, the best sparkling in Australia. Corowa also has a chocolate factory.
Yarrawonga/Mulwala - water sports on the lake.
Cobram & Tocumwal - warm country hospitality, big Murray Cod.
Echuca - big tourist town with heaps to see and do, as per Happy Wanderer.
Cohuna - Gunbower Island.
Swan Hill - Another Big Murray Cod.
Mildura - dried fruit, wineries, oranges, river cruises, heaps of eating options, must visit Great Wall of China at Mungo NP.
