Maiden Voyage

Last weekend we took our new (pre loved) house on it's maiden voyage. We just went about 25k's down to a lovely caravan park on the estuary.Everything worked very well but I will still have to shuffle things (in cupboards) around when we get on the road. The awning stood up to the brisk wind we had all weekend and the privvy screen cut down the wind so it was very pleasant.
I bought my bottle of Listerine and poured it into a spray bottle and when we set up I sprayed around the annexe and there were no mozzies at all under the awning. We put our table out under the trees and before long we were getting bitten! So,Listerine really does work!

What a lovely setting, here's to many more of them.
Hooray for Listerine. Have my bottle. Just looking for some small spray bottles. Any ideas where I might find some.

Small spray bottles from "cheepie" shops - some of them are similar to the ones hairdressers use, or they have larger ones. Looks a good set up buys - have a ball with it.

I got two spray bottles from Woolies today 1.55 each. One for Listerine and one for olive oil. A good size with a slight ball shape base.

They're sometimes with the garden stuff in your local supermarket.

Listerene doesn't seem to work that well on South Coast flies.  Have gone through nearly a large bottle (decanted into spray bottle) in three days and still they persist.

Sprayed the chairs, table general area and even myself.  They still irritate.

Haven't tried it for mozzies yet as there doesn't seem to be any down here at the moment.

I thought Listerine was just for the Mozzies Ma.
Its like the hanging things I got for flies from Bunnings. In the couple of weeks I had them up I reckon I got flies coming from 10 ks away, but no good for the mozzies that were biting me.

Haha yes gillyb, a sillly answer too but one hint I got from here.
To lubricate the portaloo of course. Keeps all the mechanical joints in good condition.
I'm still to work out how as haven't got the portaloo yet.

I hate to tell you this... I've tried everything I could think of, and a lot that others thought of, and finally my bites are healing and I'm not getting any more. There are "inland sand flies" around here, when they bite me I get blisters that last a week, and nothing helped to prevent them.

The answer is for me... spray-on odourless AEROGUARD! smilesmilesmile Use it every 4 hours and it works.

PS Welcome to the forum TA!

Vitamin B12 supplements work wonders too Gerty....when I first emigrated to Brisbane from Uk back in the 70's I was covered in massive blisters from the mozzie bites and was told by my doctor to take B12 daily and it worked within days, much better than using nasty chemicals on your skin :)

Thanks Gilly, yes, tried that too! I left the aeroguard as last resort and when everything else failed and I was desperate I finally tried it.

No I dont like  nasty chemicals either, but its still better than being covered in itchy blisters.

Try B1 NOT B12, we havw used B1 for years now and found it works very well for Mozzies and Sandflies.

Back in 1995 we saw a woman from Victoria in Kalbarri WA and you could not put a pin between the bites on her legs, She was preparing to go home as she couldn't stand the bites anymore, introduced her to B1 and the next time we met up was in Coral Bay WA and her legs were clear, she said that after a couple of days on the B1 she didn't get another bite, was as happy as Larry.

PS We start taking B1 a week before we leave on a trip.  You can buy the Betamin brand in Chemists for $9.95.  Price is for purchase in WA.

Thats interesting JRH maybe after all these years I've got it a little mixed up (maybe early onset of alzheimers) maybe it was B1 I took and not B12 I have been known to get things wrong but only very very rarely of course smile.gif

I know that feeling very well gillyb, my little (and I do mean little) grey cells don't seem to work as well as they used to, this old age isn't what it is cracked up to be hey!

Well thats good to know Ma, will be getting some for sure.

WHat colour or flavour is the one you use?

I thought the mint one was supposed to deter flies and the brown one the mozzies.

I take 100mg B1 daily which helps with the mozzies.

I use the brown listerene for the mozzies  and also tea tree oil diluted in water 1part oil 2 parts water (Thanks Sheba) for flies .

Will try the green listerene at some stage and let you know FF.

I also use Avon Skin So Soft Moisturiser for the sand flies, seems to be OK.

Hi Ma,

Some-one was just telling me about the Skin-So-Soft as a Mozzie repellant [ friends of hers have been using it that way for years ] over the weekend.

Haven't tried it myself, but if it works for sand-flies, it might also work for Mozzies.

Cheers,
Sheba.
