Your Rig.... (Possible sticky please?)

Hi, Just thought it would be interesting to see
what other people travel with, ie there set ups..
there campervans, motor homes ., what ever you use
and be proud to show it all off, and maybe just inspire some one
to do something simillar that they maybe holding off doing...
and also maybe a good reference for some one to think,
I like that set up or this set up... just for fun.. and maybe if the mods can
make it a sticky?

thanks

this is my dads set up

The Adelaide Caravan, Camping and Boat Show is on from today to Sunday.
If anyone is still wondering what rig they'll need or if they want or need a new one, I reckon there'll be more ideas there than they can cope with.
I'm going for a look on the weekend.

yeh i'll be there at the southern tow bars stand on sundayconfuse I just bought a home made camper trailer off of ebay, had to drive to melbourne to pick it up but i think once i've changed a few things arounf it'll be worth the drive,, it's based on an 8x5 box trailer, it's more of a mobile camping kitchen really with aravan gas/electric fridge, 2 burner gas cooker and a sink with water tank and 12 volt pump all installed thats 1 half of the trailer the other side is storage, it's wired for 12/240 volt power and with the addition of a solar panel and a small generator we can be fairly self contained,, it has a home made roof top tent but i doubt that we'll use it, i'll keep it on as it acts as a shelter for cooking in the kitchen, all this for $1400.00 plus $150.00 in fuel to go and get it seemed not to bad to me,,, the trailer is a heavy duty one at that and as well like camping with our oztent i see this as the ideal hook up and go for us for the time being anyway as the "big trip" is , by the looks of it still a long way off and shorter trips will be the order of the day for us for the time being, well best i get back to getting it ready for our first shake down trip in a few weeks timebiggrin
i'm not sure how to put pictures up on here but when i work it out i'll put one up of the trailer,,, it needs a new coat of paint, maybe something different to make it stand outno

Congrats on your new Camper Beachball, hope you have many happy adventures with it.

Many of us use our rigs as avatar pictures Milo. Occasionally this has led to people asking are we pleased with a particular aspect of it, and such questions are welcome of course.

The last photo was how I bought Gypsy, without the Eskys on the front. The frame was already there though.

On my outback Qld trip last year, I discovered the roof leaks with a very heavy dew. So I had to put a tarp over the roof, which was b****y difficult on my own. My brother has since shown me an easier way of getting it on by myself.

Then I had the zip-on awnings make to fit. I was so glad I did this after camping in  rain soaked Jondaryan last August.

I must admit though, since HW found her van, I'm re-thinking Gypsy.

Small is not always the most viable even if it is the most economical and affordable. Ok for short holiday trips.
This is my home, full time.
Where I'm parked is where I live.

I'm not a full time nomad, and financially, I thought this was the best way to travel, but still get around town when I'm home. But I have to store Gypsy at my daughters place, and my kit in her shed, so that's a bit of a pain. I have to go out there..40 minutes away..and load up the car, and hook up Gypsy before I can go anywhere.

I'm now thinking about a van and sell Lucy and Gypsy. Although I DO love my Lucy. cry

My sisters' is about that size Milo.  She tows a Getz behind it.   Still think that's a bit big for me though.  Also uses a lot more fuel.  Think I'll stick with mine for a while yet.

Cheers,
Sheba.

Beth I know how you feel. I hated getting rid of my little yellow Hyundai, had it since new.
But it was keep her and have no real fun and new lifestyle while I still could, or sell her and get out there and see as much as I can. Lifes too short to sit at home thinking about it.

Have a look at this home made one using a Hyundai Getz I saw in the Perth Hills recently. The lady owner had driven it all the way from Qld, has a full length single bed along the passenger side, small elect stove for power or gas for bush camping, velcro around the rear door with stick on fly screen covering the rear hatch opening for cooler sleeping etc, shelter for awning with suction cups on other side of car to hold one side in place, very cleverly thought out, lady also had a lap top pc with dongle for wireless communication etc.

Excellent Vic, some people really have great ideas don't they.  Wouldn't cost her much for fuel either.  What a great way to see oz if you dont mind roughing it.  Good on her.

I was talking to one of the lads when I was getting my van serviced and he was telling me he just throws his swag in the back of his brumby ute, only trouble he had with that was the mozzies bite him.

If you ever saw and old bloke driving along at about 60kph in an old Holden Ute on the Warrego Highway, out around Mitchell/Mungallala, it was my uncle. Right up til he was well into his 80's, he'd just pull up and roll out his swag in the back.

Vic, yes, I thought about doing that before I got Gypsy.

I've done it pretty tough car-wise over the years..had a lot of bombs in my time.. and she's the first brand new car I've ever owned. She's not quite 2 years old with just on 30,000km on her. Hence my hesitation in the change.

But I would like to go away more often, and I would like it to be a bit easier.

Congrats from me too, BB

I use my rig in my profile so other GNs might recognise it out on the road or in a park.  The tool box mounted on the back will identify it.  Despite the name "tool box" I don't carry any tools in it as I'm conscious of the need to not put too much weight in it, just a few chocks and small tarps.

Keep your options open Beth, get some use out of your present rig for awhile, but if it gets too bad then think about selling the lot and getting something more suitable.  With only 30k on your car you should get a reasonable price selling privately, dealers won't give you much though.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do, try not to jump out of the frying pan into the fire though.

Hi Sheba,
The lady with the Hyundai said it was meant for a 4WD which is a bit higher than her car which is why the slope backwards near the roof.  Still worked ok for her though.

Thanks Vic. Yes, not keen on buying or selling from dealers.

Beth, if I had a 2 year old car with only 30,000 on the clock, I would be VERY hesitant to get rid of it.

They say you lose a quarter to a third as soon as you drive it out of the caryard.

Keep it a bit longer while you are managing ok.

Yes, I've been told they lose their value as soon as you drive off the lot. Red book values it at around $13,000 - $15,000. And Gypsy owes me around $4200.

So yes, maybe wait a bit longer. I'll discuss it with my son again.
