Thank you Gary and Kerry... very helpful. Re you accommodation costs, may I ask what percentage of time you were in caravan parks and how much free-camping you did?

I'm afraid I can't take credit for the program.  I found it on the Australian Caravan club site a couple of years ago.

Just had a look for it and found a updated version.

$6000 for vehicle maintenance sounds like a lot - does this include insurance? Depreciation? I'm not sure what sort of rig you have - is it a motor home or does this include both tug and van?

Do you have health insurance and if so what category is that cost included into? $4000 for groceries is less than $100 a week which doesn't sound like much, particularly if you are shopping in regional and remote areas a lot, do you do a lot of fishing or eat a lot of vegetarian meals?

What sort of fuel are you using - we are averaging about the same over the last 3 years, but 3 years ago diesel was around $1.80 a litre, so over the last year we would definitely be averaging less. Mind you the cheapest we have seen is about $1.13, where on earth did you see it for $1.00 a litre, we'll head over there and fill up!

Please let me know when and where you are starting your next trip.
Anyone who leaves home with 10l of bourbon is my type of person and I want to tag along!
More seriously, thanks for the figures, which make for interesting reading. I'm planning on a long trip this year and I feel I may have underestimated costs. Cheers, Tony

Internet and mobile costs are included. We use prepaid internet and mobile.
health Insurance is not included, I can't remember exactly why we decided not to include, that decision was made before we left.

vehicle maint includes;
2 x oil change and filters on tug
2 x transmission flush + 1 filter
5 new tyres
3 puncture repairs
insurance and rego on car and van
gas bottle refills (part of van)
replaced self levelling suspension with coils and poly bags

Groceries.
We buy day old bread and cakes from bakeries
Only shop for specials, most supermarkets have discounted meat late afternoons and we fill waeco with them.
Codiments, snack foods etc are bought at places like, cheap as chips, reject shop etc. The van is fitted with a large pantry so we can carry about a months supply of non perishables.

Fuel,
Diesel, the $1.00 a litre was actually free (20L from a station in the flinders) but so not to screw up our figures it was put down at $1.00.

The treasurer is very pedantic with recording every cent spent so i can say with all honesty the figures supplied are accurate.

The figures you have given are a great guide to all Nomads.  Thanks for that.

For myself, once I leave home I'm leaving the stress behind and so don't even think about what it's going to cost.  If I did I mightn't go.

Hi Gary, great report as always.
I take it you are still smoking? is so would it be fair to say that the daily expenses could be $10-$15 less?

Very interesting to read all the costs. Has made me think to keep an exercise book and write it all down this trip so I can budget better for the next trip.
One thing that caught my eye, Incidentals were over 6,000. As it doesn't cover groceries or meals out, can you give a bit of an idea of the coverage of that. Is it things we would all have to buy at sometime or things only personal to you eg clothes/jewellery etc. over and above normal shopping??

Yep, still smoking, between $14 & $16 per day.
One day I will get motivated enough to stop.

Thanks Kerry and Gary - we are budgeting on $30,000 a year when we head off (providing the house is sold) in a few months for an indefinite period - so your figures are comforting

Everybody's figures will be different though, if we use caravan parks a lot that will put accommodation costs way up. But then if you dont smoke, or drink (much) theres a saving there.

I see you have your priorities right - what a load of high octane fuel you carried for your personal consumption!  Just as a matter of interest, when I went around the block in 1998 and was concerned with the cost of fuel for my Hi-ace, I noted that it cost me around $2,000 for fuel and far more for food but only $250 for camping fees! Since I have it on good authority that diesel across the Nullabor is already around $2 a litre, fuel may well win this trip.

I did a quick tally this morning and realised it cost me $30,000 for 3 years on the road, well 12 months on the road, 2 years parked in Cairns spending "mileage money". The park reduced my rent to a long-term rate. So unfortunately I didn't actually use the cash on the road full time.
I did caravan parks all the time. I did much of my own sightseeing, but I did a couple of tours and organised trips like the Savannahlander out of Cairns.
My vehicle is diesel, I don't smoke and I don't drink a lot, but I don't think I deprived myself either.

If I had to budget for anything like $30,000 a year I might as well give up now.
My budget will be around $200 a week but mobile phone will be covered in the home bills which I will have to keep paying online while away.
My biggest cost will be petrol.
