Whats the best sealant?

I am building a new slideon , and want to use the best sealant. Silastic seems to go hard, and butlemastic is messy to say the least. What do you think is the best sealant?

Hi Bill
I dont reckon you can go past the sikaflex product range, just make sure the panels are in the right spot for a start. My brother in law build his slde on abouty 8 year ago and has travelled extensively over that time and has never had a leak. He did have a small crack in his water tank and had to destroy a front panel to access that though
cheers

I would use "Sikaflex Pro" sealer.
Sikaflez 11FC as a general adhesive.
Sikaflex 252 as a high strength structural adhesive, but special preperation and primers are required.

Cheers,
Peter

Just a slightly related question. I have a hole in a galvanised water tank. The tank people want me to buy a new one and I think that I should be able to repair it. The hole is the size of a champagne cork and is about 2 ft from the top. Any suggestions would be appreciated...they want $2000 for a new tank.

I remember when we were kids and on tank water and my Dad used a bandage and some tar when we got a leak or hole.  No, he didn't wrap the tank in a bandage......laughing.gif...........he put a couple of layers of bandage over the suspect spot and then painted on this tar like stuff.  At least it smelt like tar but unfortunately he isn't around for me to ask him what it was he used.

Hi Allara. If its only 2ft down just clean the inside of the tank around the hole, & cut a piece of galv or zincalume metal a bit larger than the hole. Stick the metal patch on the inside of the tank with Roof & Gutter neutral cure silicone. Reason for inside is if you put it outside water pressure is trying to force it off.

Get some duck tape (Instant Airframe) and clean off around the hole to ensure it will stick The tape I use comes from a air conditioner supplier not that silver one from the Reject Shop. Used it years ago to cover bullet holes on an aircraft I operated in another life still there when I handed it over 12 months latter.

You could try riveting a patch over the hole using self sealing rivets and a coat of a silicon type sealer under the patch .

If it's a rust hole the remainder of the tank may be in a similar condition and the need a new one may not be too far off but try the tape/ riveted patch ideas, it will give it an extended life span

Thank you everyone. Some good suggestions, and a lot cheaper than a new tank. Will see what supplies I can pick up at Goulburn. Funny how tank suppliers don't have any suggestions...........
