We found out this morning first grandchild due mid Nov.
We were leaving next weekend to head north and do the topend before heading to Broome working our way down the coast ending back in Adelaide for Xmas (we spent last christmas away and decided in future we will come home for the festive season)
She who must be obeyed now wants to be home first week in Nov at the latest so have decided to cut out the topend and hang a left at Katherine and head west. That will give us 7 months to do the loop, is that enough time to do it justice, knowing it will be flatstrap to Tennant Creek and then more slowly.
I know what you mean. I usually stay up in Qld till Nov. Will be coming home early August this year as only daughter having 1st baby 25th Aug. Now I'm being asked Aren't I going to be here for the baby shower in July?
I spend all year by myself, Have 3 grownup children who don't have me involved in their lives, they live their lives, I'm not included. So grateful S in L is doing all this work on my van by his own, not by me asking. Now so torn as so excited only daughter having first baby and my first chance to go travelling when maybe I should be here. It's a hard one, Trying to mix travel with grandchildren as love them both.
It's enough time to do a reconnaissance for future travel. You'll just want to do more and more once you've done those months. It's enough time to get a good look around, and from then on you'll want to fill in the gaps, check out the country you missed last time, and take the roads less travelled, and it will go on and on until you can't do it anymore.

Know exactly where you are coming from Gary & Kerry, we have just come back from Tsv and the first of two grandchildren to be born this year, now it is another trip to Tsv for the Naming Ceremony over Easter, home again, before heading for Canberra for baby no.2 to be born. Hopefully we can find some time - somewhere - to start enjoying a bit of relaxation and retirement, but you know what.... wouldn't have it any other way!!!

Maybe its a matter of more shorter trips away, coming and going on a more frequent basis. Qld has my two other grandchilden to my middle son so will just keep travelling to and fro, rather than spending the whole of winter up there and the whole of summer down here.
We will keep a look out for you on the road. We will be heading off from Cairns at the end of April and we too will only go up to Katherine. We don't have a definite home time but as we are coming home through the Centre it will probably be Nov/Dec.
if i ever do any of aus it will be in bits n peices ie a state one year, another , another state some other time and I now only look after my dad, I love my sister, she comes down when she can and helps out when she can' but my brother, too involved in his own family to worry about us... if he ever reads this im sorry but its the truth and i have grand kids i havent even met yet... and im only 41 now (birthday on monday just gone..) any ways
I've heard of some people doing aus in 5 months, and some 12 months... or more..
