I normally reside in Burrum Heads itself. There are two van parks both very near the sea.The council park is right on the estuary and the other.Hillcrest is only a few metres through the Lions park to the actual water. The council site is very flat and Hillcrest has a few contours.
Spectacular estuary with all you would expect from an eastern seaboard location.Aprox twenty five mins from Hervey Bay with all the usual stuff Hervey Norman, ,Target Big W Woolworths,Coles etc. Lots of halfway decent cafes along the esplanade and some van parks too.Good for the whalewatching trips.
Burrum Heads is quite handy for the Cooloola Coast, Tin Can Bay and Rainbow beach.
Bundaberg is about an hour or so north via Childers.
Nice area to base yourself in.
There is an IGA/BP servo now and the local store has been expanded to a decent Foodworks/Post Office
If you go to Burrum Heads and visit the foodstore it is run by a very nice couple called Andrew and his wife Tania. The cafe food is quite acceptable.
What about the Woodgate side of the river? I've only found an exxy Tourist Park or 4WD camping spots. I'd rather not stay in a caravan park because of the cost.
Big problem in that area is the Fraser Coast Regional Council's no camping rules.$300-$400 fines.I am not 100% sure if Woodgate is in the Fraser region.
There are some nice areas down towards the Fraser Island end of the road which are quiet and secluded and have parking spots. That is on the ocean side,I am not sure about the river side but there is lots of open land and parking spots too.
Hope you find something suitable or some other GN knows a bit more.
We once stayed at the caravan park near Howard... Burrum River, I think...because we were meeting up with someone who had a dog and it was the only place which would accept them. (Also they hated the midges on the coast) It was ok, the big problem was that it was between the Railway and Highway... no quiet nights.
Theres a little shop in Howard that you just have to see, crammed tight with all sorts of stuff!

I've been past Howard many times on my way to Bundy, but never gone in. Yes, I don't think it'd be a nice place to camp. Woodgate is renowned for midges.
I'll be interested in seeing that little shop though!

I wasn't sure about which council Woodgate came under , the Bundy council is not so draconian as Fraser.
Coincidentally I saw the sites front page about free camping proposal for Fraser Coast, about time that they saw sense and started to cater for the free camping fraternity. We still spend our money locally wherever we pitch our site.
I am heading back to Burrum Tomorrow(Fri).I will be stopping at a mates at Goolgowi for the weekend, maybe a day or two more then up the New England to Toowoomba then to Burrum.
Just came from ten days at woodgate couldn't think of a nicer place, quite very little traffic and No SIRENS as for the midges we use Off and light a coil. It's a great spot going back in September after our Barossa, Echuca still in the planing stage' We leave in three weeks
Now that I've finally gotten on to my brother...he camps on the beach in the Kankuna section. Apparently free, and rugged stuff to get into. So definitely won't be taking Lucy car. But I am keen to camp on the beach. It's years since I've done that.
So all I have to do is get someone to tow Gypsy in.
Thanks for the imput everyone.
And John-Pam, you can be sure I'll be taking the OFF and the coils, plus anything else I can find.
Ok, My son lives inland from Childers, goes to Hervey Bay and Bundaberg all the time. Thats where I am heading, to my sons.
Hi H W, when are you coming to visit your son ?? When you do, you might like to give us a ring on 41561804 and we can get together and say hello. Cheers, Rob.

If I remember rightly, you're in the Bundy area robell, yeh?
Yes sure will robell, have spent a lot of time in Bundy. They lived there before moving to Biggenden. I love the place so hope to spend a couple of weeks just doing the beaches etc. Have taken note of your number.
Me too Beth, I love Bargara and Elliot Heads. Could walk for hours on that beach. We will have to do it together.
Oh yes, Elliott Heads too. What a beatiful view over the river and ocean from there!
Yes, jolly good idea Marj!
Apparently my brother accesses the beach camp from that side, not from Woodgate, as I thought. I'm getting quite excited now. I've been hearing about this spot for years. He said it gets very busy, so he'll go up next week to 'put dibs' on his favourite spot, before the school holidays start.
Fingers crossed it doesn't rain all Easter! He and his wife were camped there after Xmas, when all that rain was about. So he made sure he listened to the weather reports twice a day. Sure enough, 6 o'clock at night, he said, we 'gotta get outa here!' Pouring rain, sandy roads filling up, water up to his headlights, towing his 4WD caravan...at night! His wife was freaking out and so would I these days! In my younger days maybe, but couldn't handle the anxiety now.
