Matilda Country Tourist Park was a really good place to stay.
'The Shed' was the centre of activity. They do a great roast dinner every night for a reasonable price, if you're feeling like taking a night off from cooking. They also had a singer at happy hour, (free) and wonderful Bush Poets in the evening after an early dinner. Mel and Susie are there all through the winter season. They send a hat around for donations.
It was a bit crowded, as you would expect, but I reckon it's still worth a stay. And I must say, I'm not big on Caravan Parks. Normally, I'd rather free camp.
The owners, Mick and Tammy, are a very friendly couple who are on the go all day and into the night.

I came across mel & susie at winton 2010 never ever seen female poets before, had every body in laughter,if you get the chance to see them go. yes the roast was great.
we stayed there earlier this week and the place was jumping and chockas
mel and suzie were still there entertaining us and the roast was yumm Ohh
what more can I say- oh yeah the price was $30 first night/2A pwd and $28 second night 2A pwd not sure how far down the rate goes with the length of your stay.
the owners gave up on any group memberships (top tourist etc) and do their own discount thing.
great couple that own and run the park.
loved it

We especially enjoyed our night in a cabin at Matilda. We had spent 2 weeks in a hike tent and stretchers while we crossed the Simpson and then came through the Diamantina National Park. The roast was great. We had the male bush poet. He was very good also.!!!!!
We recently stayed 2 nights at the Great Northern Hotel at Winton- $2 per night (gold coin donation so couple have actually been $1 per night). As it turned out, the management put it up just as we arrived because the QLD Variety Bash and their entourage were arriving and staying overnight - had we arrived 30 minutes later the cost would have been $10 per night!!!! Watching the cars and how they were all "decorated" was great and having them all in the town would have boosted the beer sales for the month.
Laundromat on site $3 per load - hot showers and toilets - super clean amenities - meals at the pub were a bit pricey, but very good. Met some great campers there and we made out own happy hour as everyone else was all tucked up in their vans and the lights all off!!
Cheers
