We are finally back in civilization & internet range again after just finishing 8 glorious days camping at Dales Campsite in Karijini National Park near Tom Price WA. We found the scenery absolutely breathtaking & the swimming holes in the gorges to be what dreams are made of. We sooo loved it there.
Now we are staying in a $50 dollar a night caravan park in Port Hedland restocking supplies before searching out free or cheap campsites between Port Hedland & Broome. Have already picked out De Grey campsite by the river 80k north of PH as one possibility & Cape Keraudren 162k north of PH as the next. Unfortunatly with a low hung caravan in tow many of the other places seem inaccessable. We also plan to stay a few days at Barn Hill Station 120k south of Broome which is right on the coast & has excellant references and around $15 a night unpowered.
Anyone with any other spots which a caravan can make it to & is cheap or free please feel free to speak now with acurate directions & we will be eternally grateful
Cheers
Jon

I'm currently in Broome but will be departing here on the 29th towards Derby ..
I stayed at De grays on the way here .. not much there but was enough room .. main area is quite close to the roadway but you can drive further back and closer to the river if you wish.
Also has a new dumpsite installed there which is handy .. toilet block however is another story ..
You will turn off to the right just after crossing the small bridge .. but its ok for an overnighter.
Had a look at the Goldwire rest area too which is less than 200 k from broome .. It is set well back from the road on the left hand side and is obviously well used .. but well looked after too .. heaps of room .. toilet block which I didn't check out though.
I pushed on through to Broome rather than stay there, but it looked quite reasonable ..
There's another free camp just north of Anna Plains Station gate, on the eastern side of the highway called Stanley. It was a road works camp when they built the road. It's further off the road than De Grey, behind the scrub, and much quieter. You could play "spot the bilby" at night. Or you could count dingos and cats, even foxes out there. There's another road camp east of Roebuck Roadhouse called Nillibubbica Rest Area. It's nicely wooded. Neither of these have amenities but there are shaded seating areas.

We loved Barn Hill. Could have stayed there for a really long time. Because it is across the bay from Broome, had mobile phone and internet coverage there. Enjoy.
We were the same Wendy, only stayed two days. It was our first trip in the van and we had an unpowered site and couldn't power things up as we needed so we moved on. We'll be better equiped next time though.
Our site was on the cliff face and all night we could hear the waves crashing, it was magic.
Have fun Hylda and Jon

It's a great spot at Barn Hill, and nice folks run it. Very congenial place with a great beach and they tell me the fishing is ok too when the tides are right. Just enjoy.
